Ballot Text
Amendment Text

4 times An out of state gaming company has tried to get a Casino Monopoly in Ohio via constitutional ammendment. 4 times voters have told them to take a hike. Yet here they are again.

It's getting old and it bothers me they are sliding it in on an off year when they think no one (or less people) are watching.

I'm against gambling as means of tax revinue (it generally targets the poor), and I think giving a company a monopoly by constitutional amendment is wrong.

They are also billing this as a jobs creation issue, but there are no guartenees that an Ohio contractor will do the building, and likely many of the specialized positions may go to workers who are currently out of state. (I don't know how many experienced Black jack dealers live in ohio right now. I'd probalby guess not many.) The jobs likely to go to current locals are going to be the fractional +tips service jobs.

Every election cycle this issue is like a contest to see which side can lie and distort the issue more blatantly.

I'm more concerned about the fact that someone thinks casinos are Constitutional Amendment material than I am about the pros and cons of the casino. If Ohio ever amends this in it'll be hell to get rid of it.

When they opened the casino's in Detroit they hired a lot of local dealers. They then flew them out to Vegas for training. Friend of a friend is working down there, she tells us she makes pretty good money.

Work up a petition that forbids the State of Ohio granting a monopoly to any business, tie it into the anti-trust laws already in place.

This is a classic example of the 'if we keep trying eventually they will say yes' strategy.

Down here it's secession, apparently.

I'm in definite agreement on all fronts.

I'm indifferent to casinos. I certainly am not a gambler (five bucks a couple times a year with some friends on poker notwithstanding), and can appreciate how the industry as a whole tends to prey upon certain demographics and its own brand of addict, but there are local enough options that I don't believe Ohio's permission or banning of casinos will alleviate the pressure and opportunity for these people to cause themselves problems. I'm also not keen on the government being the solution for lack of personal responsibility.

But when it comes down to the bottom line, I despise government-supported monopolies, and placing gambling in the Constitution even more so, let alone enshrining both simultaneously.

I live in Vegas.

Gambling's kind of a big deal here.

I fully support a government mandated ban on all gambling everywhere that's not Las Vegas. Including lotteries. And Indian casinos. And internet gambling.

You get the picture.
