Reviews are finally starting to hit and it's looking pretty good. If you played AC3 and loved the naval battles, this one seems like a must-buy.

The amazing world of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has kept me gladly occupied for longer than any other game in the series, even though its story isn’t the strongest. At no point in my dozens of hours was I ever at a loss for something to do. Simply sailing wherever the wind takes me and seeing what sort of trouble I can get into is a complete joy. Beyond the underwhelming main campaign, Black Flag delivers a world brimming with gorgeous places to go, amazing secrets to discover, and nefarious pirates to stab.

Is it just me or do the games in this series come out at REALLY short intervals?

They're pretty much on a yearly release schedule. AC has become what is now probably Ubisoft's most recognizable property.

That's honestly what eventually kept me from playing them, I just didn't have time to absorb one before the next one is out. I loved all the way through brotherhood, and then they started hitting so fast. Also, kind of got tired of waiting for the desmond game. I'll probably play that one, whenever it hits.

I was so wrapped up in Brotherhood, I only just finished it two weeks ago.

I have started Revelations and am dying to get to AC 3.

There is so much to see and do, I get lost in the side stuff and ignore the main mission mostly. As a matter of fact, it had been so long since I started Brotherhood, the endgame refreshed my memory as to what happened in the beginning of the game.

I'm sorta picking up on what is going on in the game world and I don't want to play out of order, now. So, based on my play schedule, I'll likely not pick up Black Flag for probably a year or more.

I was going to play these when I was catching up on other blockbuster series I had missed but I didn't like the way they threw an exclusive onto PSP and then started flagging certain content as platform specific. I don't like that business model.

But you get 60 extra minutes of gameplay on Playstation! So lame.

I'm with Foamy, except I never made it past #2. I liked the concept of the game and had more fun in #2 (#1 was extremely repetitive). I just never caught up.

From what I was seeing, it felt like the game series should have been a trilogy. Anything beyond that is just milking it.

Spoiler alert, but you're never going to get that game. Maybe you should play part 3.

It is, really. You don't need to play Brotherhood or Revelations if you want (though they are some of my favorites). Those are mostly for fans of Ezio and playing 2/B/R spans his entire life. However you could go 1->2->3 and not really miss anything from Desmond's part of the story, which gets definitively concluded.

Part 4 is a prequel in terms of who you play while inside of the animus, and outside of it you play an Abstergo employee that's doing research for a game that Ubisoft is publishing :p True story.

Son of a *****!

Ok, then as an acceptable substitute, I will take the futuristic sci-fi assassin story that they should get to about 2030, assuming their release schedule holds up.

This finally hit PC last week. Managed to play it some this weekend. I have to say, I'm hooked. I absolutely love it!

I haven't really been a HUGE fan of the series. I liked the story/concept of the first game, but it was SO repetitive, that I just couldn't finish it. The 2nd game was much less repetitive, and the story was pretty cool. But for some reason, I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.

AC3 however, I really enjoyed. Maybe it was Connor's character, or maybe I'm just more interested in that particular time period (Revolutionary War), but it really drew me in. I couldn't wait to finish it. And even after I finished it, there was so much other stuff to do. And I loved the Naval Combat missions.

This game is just amazing. Sailing the open seas, attacking convoys, avoiding bounty hunters - It's just awesome. And that's just the naval portion. If I see an island that I haven't explored yet, I can literally dive off my ship, swim to the island and explore it to my heart's content. If I want to get in the life boat, and harpoon a bull shark? I can even do that. It's not completely open world - There are some portions you can't access unless you've progressed the story far enough - but it's close enough that you hardly notice.

I have to say, my favorite aspect of the game? The 'shanties' the crew sings while I'm sailing. I don't particularly like the way you 'unlock' them, but the concept is cool. "Captain went off on a new adventure and learned some new songs for us!" I find myself hunting for new shanties just so I can hear the crew sing them. I could literally just sail around all day, and listen to the crew sing. I've even found myself singing along with them, and my wife thought I was crazy, hah!

Here are some of my favorites, so far:
Lowlands Away
Spoiler:

Leave Her Johnny
Spoiler:

Drunken Sailor
Spoiler:

And in case you wanted to hear them all, here's a youtube video with all of the shanties in the game.

Anyway, just wanted to share my thoghts. If you are holding off on this game because you haven't played the others, or are worried about missing some story elements, then don't worry. The story stands pretty well on it's own. And the open world / open seas aspect is enough to set this game apart.
