Well Activation just confirmed that Call of Duty runs at 720p natively on the Xbox One, and at 1080p on the PS4.

And 4k on PCs?

BF4 runs at 900p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One. The image quality comparisons I've seen haven't been too damning, despite that.

Lots of bad news (as someone who uses their PS3 to do a lot of media streaming and cd playing):

Source: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2013/10/30/playstation-4-the-ultimate-faq/

Quote:
Will users be able to replace the PS4 system’s stock 500GB hard drive? What hard drive sizes are supported?
PS4 owners will be able to replace the PS4 system’s standard hard drive. The PS4 system’s hard drive is used to store downloaded game and video content, game save files, gameplay movies and images, and more.
What type of hard drive does the PS4 system use?
The PS4 system is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.
Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on the PS4 system?
No, this feature is not supported on PS4.

Quote:
When playing disc-based games on the PS4 system, do I need to install data to the hard drive?
Yes, all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into the PS4 system just like on the PS3 system.
If I rent a game disc, and then decide I want to buy it digitally, can I use the installation to avoid downloading it and just activate my license?
In this example, you would have to delete the disc install data and fully install the digital version of the game.

Quote:
Can I listen to audio CDs using the PS4 system?
No, the PS4 system does not support audio CDs

Quote:
Will the PS4 system support media servers or DLNA support in order to stream videos or movies from a home PC?
The PS4 system does not support client functionality for media servers.

Quote:
Will I be able to play background music while I play PS4 games?
Yes, the Music Unlimited streaming service will allow you to listen to music while you play PS4 games. A subscription to Music Unlimited is required. Get full details here.
Does PS4 include a music visualizer feature?
No.
Will I be able to play MP3s on the PS4 system?
No.

I love that after all this time, we're not able to take our own music and play it during a game. That was functionality that was in the original, first xbox! 2 steps forward, one step back. The system comes with a 500GB drive, and they're saying games have mandatory installs of 30-50GB (for release games). That system is going to fill up fast.

Fortunately, Sony seems to be changing direction on that due to feedback.

Yoshida tweeted that he would pass the feedback along to the development team, and followed up with tweeting "Had a very good discussion w the PS4 Dev team today. We're happy & appreciative to learn so many people use and like PS3's media features".

Word is, mp3 playback and DLNA is coming with the second firmware update.

Which 'word' would that be?

Why do you care? I'm sure you'd rather "wait until the official announcement."

I'm moderately interested in the next gen consoles, and what features they will and won't have.

I guess I'm not terribly interested in fanboy rumors being used to refute facts.

But to your point, you are right in the sense that at this point, I'm not planning on being an early adopter of either platform.

"Hey guys, sorry, we didn't realize features that have been standard since the Playstation one (like playing a freaking CD) would be missed. Our bad."

Granted, audio cd's aren't the primary method of playing music nowdays, but really, what reasoning is there to dropping that feature on a disc based console?

So that we can stop wasting time and effort on past stuff and move forward? It seems gamers are trying to force PS4 and Xbox One to become iterative upgrade, but don't change models that PCs follow.

The real issue (in my perspective) is that they're not making changes on the console side that benefit the consumer. They're dropping useful features (that all pc's have, obviously) without making a significant improvement in another area. We've discussed it before, and the xbox one could've knocked this out of the park with one simple change. Allow you to play offline with a disc in the drive, or online via the cloud with no disc. That's all it would've taken to nail it, and not eliminated most of the world that does not have a stable, fast internet connection. And yet they could not do it. They had to play all or nothing, and lost, and then took their ball and went home. And for some reason, Sony this generation is giving us PS3 plus, while removing features that the PS3 already has. So really, PS3 minus. Consoles made a lot of sense when they were completely unique, easy to use, self contained systems. Now they're locked down PC's that require an update every time you put a game in, that only justify their existence by spending billions on console exclusive titles to force you to buy another system. I'm curious how long this business model will last, especially with so many other systems making a play for the living room.

I think the SteamBox will kill either PS4 or Xbone.

Your rationale for the existence of consoles does not match mine, nor most peoples that I know who game on consoles. You don't buy a console because it is unique, you buy it so you don't have to deal with a PC or more importantly, its upgrade cycle and maintenance. You go to gamestop, grab a game off the shelf, drop it in the tray and it works. Basically, a console is gaming for idiots, now those idiots can get some of their games on a phone but that model can't compete. Angry Birds and Candy Crush don't have the same audience as Call of Duty, Madden or Final Fantasy.

The fragmentation of console devices will ultimately hurt consumers just as the splintering of digital movie/tv show market has hurt consumers. Netflix used to have EVERYTHING, now if you want to see everything you need Amazon Prime, Hulu+, iTunes, HBOGO, NetFlix, EPIX, Etc, etc.

True, but that was kind of what I was thinking of with my "patching" line, multiple skus with different memory levels, mandatory installs, required accounts, managing currently installed data on your hard drive to make space for new games, console gaming has done nothing but get more and more complicated over time. There were what, three Playstation hardware revisions and four or five 360 ones. Some backwards compatible, some had wireless and some did not, some had HDMI and some did not. Granted, they were all still compatible (as long as they had enough hard drive to run the game you wanted to play), but much more complicated for the masses than previous generations, and the crap they were trying to drm into this gen means they're not interested in slowing that down. Consoles are no longer "the easy way" to game.

I disagree, I never did a thing to my 360 except drop a game in the tray and then play it.

It is a $99 Sony product launching in Asia. They are cockblocking Ouya with it.

Yeah but it has nothing to do with Android or low-cost development platforms. All it does is stream remote play from your PS4 and give you the ability to play Vita games on your TV.

I'm taking next Friday off, and I've changed my PS4 pre-order to arrive at the house. The two things aren't related (I just have a ton of vacation time that will go poof if I don't take it by the end of the year, and next Friday seems as good a day as any), but still. Fun.

I need to get around to canceling my Xbox one pre-order. Doesn't seem to be any point to it.
