It was actually an in-person conversation about Google carried on while standing around a bonfire with a friend.

Hey, will BluRays play in 1080p or is it going to be 720 too?

Yes, just take a second to consider how much harder is it to render 3D on the fly at 1080p60 versus rendering a static video image at 1080p24

Answer: a LOT.

You can't even say that. You can say that the X-Box One isn't capable of native 1080p in *that* game, by *that* launch window.

I mean, ****. If "X game runs upscaled to output 1080p" is the criteria for saying that a console can't run 1080p games, then neither can the PS4, since Battlefield 4 runs upscaled from 900p.

Could probably get a superior specced PC for $500 than an Xbox one, but I haven't priced PCs out in a while

The Kinect is an incredible piece of raw machinery and engineering, but it's not implemented well into games, nor does its voice control provide a truly fast, seamless way to navigate the operating system. The TV integration is an awkward hodgepodge of menus and overlays and dead ends. There's a massive opportunity for Windows apps to turn the Xbox into something no one could have imagined, but it's as yet gone unexplored.

That it has a handful of strong, exclusive games at launch only supports its legitimacy as a gaming console and not just an entertainment hub.

For now, the Xbox One is one impressive living room box machine—and it more than justifies its $500 dollar price with the inclusion of at least $100-worth of set-top boxitude—but you're going to be better off waiting for a little while to see how things shake out.

But—and this is admittedly a sizable but—if the Xbox One can straighten the few little quirks it has with some software tweaks, this thing is going to be unstoppable in a way the PS4 could never touch. It's too versatile, too feature-ridden, too future. So wait, yes. But while you do, go ahead and start clearing out plenty of space underneath your television.

Hmm. I was a bit disappointed reading Kotaku's description of the limitations of the IR blaster functionality -- namely, its lack of state memory. I guess Logitech's Harmony series of universal remotes have spoiled me over the last six years or so.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't just partner with Logitech or something, there. If they had come out and said "By the way, you can just import your existing Harmony profiles from a PC on your local network" it would have been an instant selling point.

The good news, of course, is that this is something that can be patched via software updates. So there's still time for it to replace my remote. It just doesn't get to be the center of my home entertainment center *yet*.

They're still trying to recoup Surface losses. Partnering with Logitech would give Logitech a piece of the pie, and Microsoft wants all of the profit money.

The Verge review got me scared about the home theater integration. The Xbox can control the power of your TV / Audio receiver, but if they are already turned on and you say, "Xbox, on" then it will power off your TV/audio and turn on the Xbox. It doesn't check to see if they're already on or not. That's not even the bad part, though. It also doesn't properly pass audio or video signals which kind of defeats the purpose of having a home theater in the first place. Hopefully these are issues that can be fixed, or it'll never be "Input One."

Well, sure. But Harmony's a big enough brand that it would probably cement some additional sales (not to mention garner even better reviews for the media appliance features -- my Harmony remote seems like magic to people who've never seen it before.. imagine the stir voice commands that control your entire entertainment system flawlessly would cause among those unfamiliar with Harmony in the first place)...

Lenas: As I said, no state memory for the IR blaster. Kotaku says there's a buried beta surround sound option currently, that will be mainstreamed soon. Haven't gotten to the Verge article yet to see the video bugs you reference.

But yeah. I won't be jumping to integrate it on Friday, I'll just be swapping out an old console (and then digging back into my wire nest between the holidays, most likely, to figure out a permanent setup).

Sure, but my AT&T Remote does the same thing now. If I turn the Cable Box on while the TV is already running it shuts off the TV. The rest sounds like exactly why I wanted it to begin with.

Hop, it's an annoyance, but that was the least of my concerns. My real problem is the Xbone **** up audio/video signals.

There's also the minor annoyance that the "unifying" Xbox One will still have you reaching for your cable box remote, because it can't access any of your DVR content.

Here's an uncut IGN demo video that is unflattering to say the least: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/11/19/xb ... uncut-demo

Can you be more explicit about where exactly in the half hour video I should be looking?
