You have an Xbox, so I am not even sure what your real objection to Steam Box/OS is. Either you think that small specialized computers you plug into your TV to play video games are a good idea, or you don't.

I already have a PC that plays games with steam. I'm not seeing why this box with its goofyass controller is such a good thing. It won't play console games, so I'm still going to need an X-Bone.

It looks like its a solution looking for a problem that doesn't exist.

Or maybe it's just a solution to a problem that you don't personally have?

It'd be like me complaining about the Xbox 360 S being useless because I already have an Xbox 360 and it already runs all the same games just fine, so why spend $250 on a new console that does the same thing but is slightly slimmer/quieter? Just because it's not useful to me doesn't mean it isn't useful for other people.

Its a PC... that plays games on Steam with a proprietary OS, fragmented hardware schema, and an awkward controller.

We already have an app for that. Y'know, a PC that plays games on Steam with Windows/Mac and KB/Mouse/Controller.

Except the OS is open source and all hands-on accounts from developers that have used the controller (instead of internet quarterbacking based on pictures) all say the controller is good and the closest anyone has gotten to mouse-level accuracy.

But that's my point. What will this box do that my PC won't? I can't see them selling many of these to people that are their target audience. They already have PCs that are equal or better to the box.

The target audience is people who don't have gaming PCs, or people who already have a gaming PC but would like another one to hook up to their TV so they can play in the living room. You aren't the target audience.

I imagine the target audience would be a family with 0 or 1 computers. Having a Steambox would allow the kids to play PC games without exposing them to full Internet access or needing to setup/run/maintain Windows. This assumes that the Steambox is locked down to only playing Steam and also is reasonably priced compared to the XBone/PS4/WiiU.

SteamBox's target audience:
• Wants a console experience
• Wants games to work even after "console" upgrades (see: backwards compatibility)
• Does NOT want to bother hooking up their main PC to their television
• Wants to be able to reliably play all of their PC games with some modicum of accuracy they'd have with a mouse

Why is it so hard to understand that some people want a box with PC capability and a console user experience? Plugging your home computer into a TV is not the same thing; unless you make a home computer running SteamOS. Steam's Big TV mode or whatever is not the same either, because that only changes Steam interface itself and not the system's.

On a personal level, I'm going to be replacing my Macbook Pro with a Surface 2 Pro in the near future. I currently use my laptop to game with, and the S2P can replace it for what I play, but I don't want to game on a small screen. I am strongly considering getting or creating a SteamBox so I can keep my gaming library and so I can play it in the living room like I have always wanted to. I love some PC games, but I really **** hate using a mouse and keyboard because I use them at work all day, every day. It's very possible that I end up with a PS4 for Sony exclusives and a SteamBox for PC titles, skipping the Xbox One completely.

If you're not in the demographic that's fine, but don't wave your hand and say it's a dumb idea because a lot of people want something like this.

Yeah, with that said, I'm *not* their target audience in any way, shape or form.

I want a console experience, therefore, I'm going to buy a console. Most likely an X-Bone.
I don't care about Backwards Comp. 7 years is plenty of time to get enjoyment out of a console generation, furthermore, a new console doesn't invalidate an old one.
I don't really want to do this either. KB/Mouse is a PITA for couch gaming.
I can already do that. On my PC. /shrug

Personally I don't mind a keyboard and mouse for couch gaming. I'm sitting on my couch with my keyboard and mouse right now. However I have a coffee table that pulls up to hand height and no Wife to complain about having my PC hooked up to the living room TV, so im not probably your target demographic either.

So it will only stream games from your Mac/PC and play the Linux versions natively?

Correct, but is that really a surprising fact? I mean, you don't expect your Xbox to play Nintendo games. Now before you say, "Well I expect my PC to play PC games," I would point out that there is no such thing as a PC game. I mainly use OS X on my laptop but I need to keep a Windows partition installed because my full Steam library isn't available on a Mac.

It's a developer decision which platforms to support, and developers really seem to love Steam so I'd bet money on big devs wanting to support SteamOS just like so many mobile companies jumped on Android.

All that said, I believe the PS4 OS is a variant of FreeBSD so all of their games are basically OpenGL, which would make ports nothing more than a matter of clicking a different compile button.

When Valve unveiled its Steam Machines and controllers in September, it also announced a high-performance prototype optimized for living-room gaming, with a completely upgradeable and open system. Only 300 of those boxes have been shipped to Steam users for beta testing. Everyone else will have to wait until 2014.

In October, Valve designer Greg Coomer offered a reminder that, because the Steam consoles will be developed by different companies (including iBuyPower), users can expect different hardware and sustainability specs from the original Steam prototype.

Steam Machines are expected make an appearance at CES 2014 in January.

Wonder how much the controller is going to be on it's own. I'm planning to build a box for the living room for SteamOS, but will keep it upgradable, unless there's some really compelling reason to buy a specialized steambox.

I saw that too, interesting decision. Honestly, while the touchscreen was a really cool idea, for playing most games it just seems impractical, which is probably what came out in their internal testing. Hopefully this will keep the cost down too.
