It's time again to build a new desktop PC. I use it for work mostly but do some gaming too, and have a slew of games sitting in wrappers because I've stuck with XP for so long.

My question is this: Do you think it would be worthwhile to wait until the end of the month for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals or just order everything up now. I'm not in a huge hurry but the savings of 30 bucks overall isn't really that big of a deal. I'm looking at the Haswell i7 and the graphics card I'm looking at is a GTX 770, but thinking it might be worthwhile to see if they drop a lot or get on board with the new Radeon cards coming out.

Any input is always appreciated.

Its been my experience that right AFTER Christmas is the best time to buy. While there are usually good sales after Thanksgiving, the best sales are usually later. Retailers pay taxes on anything they still have in stock on January 1, so they're in a hurry to offload it, so getting rid of additional merchandise is a priority. YMMV. Those Cyber Monday deals are usually pretty darn good.

Also, the R290 from ATI is getting AMAZINGLY good reviews. As in, "we think they might have sent us the wrong board" reviews.

So might take a close look at that one.

Just know that if you wait til after Christmas, there's going to be some new processor/videocard/new technology that's going to be coming out in February and you'll be tempted to wait it out even longer.

I say buy a new computer when you need one. I don't have too much experience from black friday/cyber monday sales for PC components, but from what I've seen in the past the deals aren't that special. Besides, even if you get one component for a ridiculously good deal, that's going to be what? $50 off? But like I said, I don't have too much experience with it, so I could be wrong here.

I'm basing my suggestion on the fact that I worked at a computer retail store 12 years ago. Cyber Monday wasn't even a thing then. The principle is still sound, unless they've changed tax laws significantly since then.

I Think I'll go ahead and order up after I get back from my trip to TN.

The R290 is what i was really holding out for. I'm not going to get a better chip right now than the Haswell, since Intel is dumping the retail chip market.

Thanks much for everyone's feedback.
