Seriously, **** all of you. How can you actually get any fulfillment out of a job where you basically sit down and do nothing but lie to people the whole day? I'm trying to buy a new car. Buying a new toy should be a fun and exciting process, you have managed to suck all the life out of it to the point where I'm actually dreading visiting dealerships, it's now a chore that I have to perform because I really need to replace the POS I'm driving. I leave your dealerships feeling like I need a shower, and I'm seriously considering asking my father to tag along to any future dealership visits in the hope that maybe with an older person present you'll tone down the "lying *******" aspect a bit.

Please stop telling me about how 7% is a "great rate that nobody will beat". Please stop talking about how you only have three of these cars and they'll all be sold by tomorrow so I have to buy it now. I didn't believe you the first time, emphasizing it four times during the test drive makes me want to test if the airbags actually work. Please stop trying to convince me that red is a "premium color" and costs $2,000 more. Please stop offering me a price that's 10% higher than what you advertise on your website and tell me that no dealership in the state will offer me a better price, then lie to me about the website's applicability when I point this discrepancy out. Please do not call me six **** times after I leave your dealership without buying to remind me that my credit has been approved and I should come sign paperwork or to tell me about all these great rebates and/or sales you're having "today only" so I need to rush down there. I work the night shift, my friends and family know not to call me while I'm trying to sleep, but of course you have to repeatedly ruin that. Please do not repeatedly make me sit around for 15-20 minutes while you pretend to argue with your manager about lowering the price of the car. Please stop asking me facepalm inducing rhetorical questions that make my brain hurt. You said $289/month was the best you could do. When I produced an ad for the same car at $269/month, you actually asked me, "Well, why do you think you should only have to pay $269/month?" Please die.

You should talk to PNC bank if they are in your area, they have this cool loan program where they approve you for up to $XXX and cut you a blank check on the spot that you can take into the dealer with you.

If you've figured out the car make and model you want, go through Consumer Reports, pay them the little fee for their fact sheet/printout detailing what the car should cost you and check the dealers in your area they recommend.

Most often if you walk into the dealership holding the paper they will greet you with a smile, and walk you into the back to talk where no suckers can overhear you. Then the smile will disappear and they will start the paperwork on the car.

As far as financing, Khross is right. Go to your bank, get pre-approved for the loan, and get the number the dealer needs to call.

They do make a small but reasonable profit. They probably will not have your exact model as you want it on the lot, they might have to order the car. If they aren't making money on it they won't take your offer.

They won't pretend to be your best friend, but they will respect you for doing your homework.

There's a great book I always read before buying a car (which, thankfully, only happens once or twice a decade, if I can help it): "What Car Dealers Won't Tell You". It's old and a lot of the info is outdated, but it's great for giving you insights into how the process works.

I always suffer through until I find at least two vehicles that are acceptable. I then go to one dealership, and call the other. The three of us then work it out.

Oh, it also doesn't hurt to keep in touch with the salesman. It makes him believe that you like the vehicle, just won't buy over price. He'll feel like if he just gets the price down, you'll come back in.

If you are looking at any Ford product, join the Mustang club of America for $50

That will entitle you to use something called "X Plan" - you get most ANY Ford vehicle at dealer invoice - (0.4% * dealer invoice) + whatever kind of administrative fees that may apply.

It's also a great way to cut through the crap - there's no dicking around when you tell them you're going to use the X-Plan.

EVERYONE is eligble for the X Plan and it is crap because dealer invoice is a garbage number that no dealer actually pays. The A Plan (Employees) is amazing.

Honestly Xeq, if that's your experience you 1) aren't being hardline enough with them and 2) are having shitty luck.

I've had several great salespeople when it comes to cars, but I always request word of mouth referrals from people.

I walked into a dealership once, with the Consumers Reports paperwork in my trunk. I looked at the car that most matched the paperwork. The best price I could get them to by myself was close to 8k over the CR price. I walked with the salesman back to my car, thanked him for his time, pulled out the paperwork and as soon as he saw it he started yelling at me. I drove away, he flipped me the bird as I left. It was a dealership, it is no longer in business. Most car salespeople are not your friends.

There is a dealership in Roseville (near here) that sells used cars cheap. No warranty, low prices, and an open information policy where they tell you everything they know that is wrong with the vehicle. They say about most of the cars they sell that they might last you another three years if you take good care of it. Yes, we make a profit, no, we don't haggle, thank you for your business and come back the next time you need an old serviceable car. Most honest dealership I've ever dealt with. The car I bought there lasted me about three years. I was satisfied.

Just got my car loan yesterday at 3.7 for four years at my bank. Took about 20 minutes and most of that was waiting on the printer.

Don't ever go to a dealership for the loan. Unghh.
