The Glade 4.0

So, we're in the process of short selling our house in Alabama. The broker met with a couple who really like it, and she said she thought they would pay the necessary amount. The couple (particularly the wife) has looked at it multiple times, and were supposed to meet yesterday with the broker to schedule a home inspection. I hadn't heard anything yet, so I emailed the broker to ask how it went. This was her response:



I...I don't even know what to say. I cannot word right now. I have lost proper wording ability.

It is in the Deep South. We have people like this in California. It always amazes me but there are people for whom this is still an issue. On the flip side, I've talked to black people who say they are not comfortable living in mostly white areas. This is humankind, in all its confusing ridiculousness.

I have to wonder what the minimum safe distance for blackness is for this woman. Is it, like, a 5-mile radius? 600 yards?

I had to convince my wife that we weren't moving into the ghetto after the first time we visited the property and the only 3 neighbors she saw were black. I then reminded her how extremely racist she was being.

I suspect the answer is Eye or Earshot

I get this type of response from a large number of people that move from the midwest (or even many parts of the northeast) to the south. It really just seems to freak them out, and I've never understood it.

Come on Farsky, you grew up in the South. Surely you knew of this condition?

As a fellow Southerner......it's never a surprise. I live in a rural section outside of town, and we've black people living down our road (and they've been there since my grandpa bought the land 60 years ago). People still give screwy looks if I tell them we have black neighbors. Like I am a nutjob, or (gasp) a liberal scum.

My in-laws are that way. And they live in a rather high end neighborhood. Well wouldn't you just know, they now have a couple of houses around them that are owned by black people! ROFL. This is upper scale houses. It's a sore subject that doesn't get brought up.

We have had "white flight" in my area for decades. It's why my town has migrated all over the place over the years. Build a new section, 20 years from now it will be "white-less" and the "whites" will build another one further out.

Sorry you are having trouble selling your house to small minded bigots. Hope you get a buyer soon.

White flight isn't limited to the south.

Over the years I've had neighbors of many ethnic identities. I much prefer suburban black to white trailer trash moving on up. Hispanic neighbors tend to have some mighty nice BBQs. Chinese tend to be the quietest. I could go on.

We're all people, let them distinguish themselves by behavior, not skin tone.

When we bought our house in 1987, we had a black family on one side and a Vietnamese family on the other side. There were whites across the street and a couple houses down. There were Hispanics across the street and up and down either side of the street. An Indian family lived a few houses down.

Today we have pretty much the same mix. I don't care what race, religion, creed you follow...as long as you are good neighbors, which we have.

I don't care who you are or the color of hour skin, just mow your damn yard, don't do anything to lower the property value and keep a low profile with the noise and drama.

I'd say my neighborhood is about 80% white, so there's a decent population of blacks.

No hispanics though, that I've seen. (Except during the spring...)

Anyway, nobody cares. That said, there's still a great deal of self-segregation. I don't know any of the black folks at all, they just don't seem to be around.

Down here there are practically no black people, and relatively few whites. I'd say the hispanics are more anti-black than any whites I have ever met, depsite rarely having met any.

If you want to experience racism, try moving to an Asian country as a not-Asian. You'll be fine, until you try to get a job, date someones daughter, or negotiate your rent....etc...

Australia has a reputation for being a racist country based on its treatment of its indigenous people, the aborigines. The basic misconception is that they were anti-black because of the skin tones of he aborigines. The reality is that they did, around the same time as the United States, the same thing we did to our indigenous people. I think we were a bit worse, quite a bit worse.

We're still growing, learning how to get along. Hopefully it will all get better before we kill each other off.

DE, Los Angeles has a lot of ongoing examples of that behavior. Of course it is mostly in the gang cultures. Most citizens just try to stay out of the crossfire.

With gangs, "not part of our gang" is the real issue. Being a different race is just icing on the cake.
