For a second I thought you said the Void Rangers would be based in one and I was like...wow you really did spend a lot of money.

It's possible that when destroyed, after a time, a new one will be manufactured and appear in-game. Much like real carriers appear only every few years. It's good that they're limiting them, though. Titans in EVE have had to be endlessly nerfed as they've gone from "rare, powerful centerpiece to a fleet" to "can only be countered with more Titans."

Is the Bengal carrier the only carrier class ship in the UEE? I'd think it was old by now and there would be a more up to date carrier included in UEE fleets. Ones that might not be so available for "taking over".

$15 Mil stretch goal was an escort class carrier.

For player access? I would hope that the UEE military has nice big super carriers we could not hope to assault and capture / own in their armada.

Maybe there's a lot more, and every time a new carrier is commissioned, an older Bengal makes its way to surplus sales, thus repleneshing the 1-6 that could be out there?

Whats the minimum package necessary for alpha access? I can't really find any info on that and I don't see anything that shows my 300i pledge grants it.

The Digital Scout package with a base Aurora allows Alpha and Beta access for the lowest price point I can find. The Pathfinder package gives a 315p and alpha / beta access at a higher cost.

If you log in and then click on "My RSI" and select "My Hangar" from the drop-down, it will list all the pledges and stretch goal rewards tied to your account.

Pledge packages have an arrow you can click to expand out a break-down of what's included in the package. Alpha and Beta access is listed there, where applicable.

Likewise, if you're pledging in the store, the packages will show that break-down, too.

Currently, the smallest pledge package that contains Alpha access is the Digital Scout package, which includes an Aurora. Any *package* that includes a ship other than an Aurora (note, add-on ships aren't packages) should also have Alpha access, while the slots last.

28 million spacebucks!

28 Mil unlock -
New Starter Ship – The team at Consolidated Outland has decided to take Roberts Space Industries head on in 2944 by premiering the Mustang personal spacecraft. We will use these additional resources to create another ship company and starter ship for Star Citizen. The new ship will be offered for sale alongside the Aurora, so players have a choice between two options to begin the game!

30 mill future unlock -
Origin 890 JUMP – The rumors are true: Origin Jumpworks has a larger ship in the works! The Origin 890 JUMP is an interstellar super-yacht with exquisite styling and an array of high quality upgrade options. Travel the stars in style with multiple decks, high visibility windows and a small boat bay. Whether you’re outfitting it to explore new worlds or to take a pleasure cruise through Terra, the 890 JUMP is the epitome of luxury, class and refinement!

There's also a poll for the 31 million unlock on this page, if you want to vote on the function of ship.

The ship out today would seem to be a decent command base for the Void Rangers I think. What do people say?

The Caterpillar's one of my favorite ships, design-wise. I anticipate great things from its modular configurability.

Better start recruiting, then, hehe. Because anything larger than a Corvette won't land on a planet, so you can't just park them in a secure garage and log off. Stuff that big is meant to have a large group taking shifts defending and crewing it. At least, that was the cutoff I last saw from official channels. The rumor mill has been maintaining that Destroyers could be docked to a space station and be logged out and protected, but I've never seen anybody maintaining that position able to produce a source.

Couldn't you just park it in high security space right next to say the space cops main base in the area?

Can you park a car in the police station parking lot without it being towed?

The space cops would probably ask where you got that US Navy ship, and you'd be at a loss to produce a bill of sale, lol. ;)

They might want to re-think the idea of having it manned 24-7 if they want to avoid having EVE 2.0. Even supercapitals in EVE can log off at a Player-owned Structure or even just in space and "disappear". Regular capitals can dock at space stations. If a ship has to be logged in and manned all the time it will be near-worthless.

The idea is that those ships are super-guild or alliance centerpieces, not something that most people are meant to have. Most people are meant to be dogfighting in fighters -- that's how it's attempting to avoid EVE 2.0. By making big-ass capital ships so hard to keep that they're super rare and don't dominate gameplay.

That's also what makes the Corvettes appealing as small guild flagships. They're "capital" ships (in the 90's space sim sense of being multi-crew ships that demand torpedo bombers to constitute a serious attempt at taking them down) that can be put away when you're not using them.

I'm fairly certain Chris Roberts played in the same XvT rp-league I did; the more development I see for Star Citizen, the more I see elements of that old, old XvT league emerging. And, trust me, that's a good thing. Gigantic rewards require gigantic risks, real threats, and coordination to maintain. Super-capital ships should be vulnerable if you can't man them; they should be theft-prone or piracy-prone if unattended and undermanned. World of Warcraft, for all its amazing innovations and dominance, hurt the massively-multiplayer experience. Star Citizen is trying to provide an alternate solution to the diversity of play-styles an MMO can support. Destroyers and UEE Carriers and larger ships should, by default, require constant surveillance and use; they should be guild/organization projects, not a secondary market for people with too much free time.
