Anyone else seen this atrocity of a movie yet? Caught the matinee this afternoon with some friends while nursing a Christmas part hangover, and this movie made it about 100x worse. About the only decent thing in the movie is the 3D.

Hmm, I consider you a pretty straight shooter Ellessar. I was thinking of seeing it tomorrow, but now I think I'll wait a bit.

It was ok. Good but not great. Rather hackneyed storyline with very few surprises, but polished slick and well produced. Shame. 6.5/10 from a director who should be hitting 8-9.

It's sitting at 83% on RottenTomatos.com, but that's their positive/negative filter--83% of 183 reviewers were generally positive. It only has an average rating of 74%, which seems to indicate that the vast majority of reviewers think it's worth watching but not spectacular, with a few "This wasn't all that great but it wasn't terrible" sprinkled in with them.

Absolutely breathtaking. Stunning visuals, internally consistent, nothing really that broke my suspension of disbelief.

Sure, the story was
Spoiler:
Dances With Wolves...IN SPACE!
But I can forgive that in view of the spectacle laid out before me.

I want to see it again, in 3d this time. :)

Definitely not everything good was in the trailer. I was torn though, at the end when the baddie was in the mech fighting, he was pretty bad ***.

I've heard that this movie is pretty much "Ferngully." I am still curious to see it though.

I've also heard it described as "Pocahontas with blue space elves."

Yeah, I'm sure you can make an argument that when he has complete control over a movie in terms of storyline, etc., it may not come out quite as well as we would hope. Just for the spectacle, though, I'd like to see it in a theater, so long as the story-line isn't overly offensive.

Phe and I just got back. Absolutely spectacular. Cameron is hands-down the best action director in the world, not only because of his grasp of action but also character and his innate skill at building cliffhangers within cliffhangers, and he was on his game for this film. Watching a film like Avatar shows just how useless and shitty most action movies really are (I'm looking at you, Transformers films).

Go see it, with 3D or without (but preferably with). It's a great movie, no matter the format.

This alone makes it worth seeing, in my book.

Oh, and he may not be very nice, Farsky. I just remembered that he dumped Linda Hamilton, so that takes him down a few notches, for me.

That's fantastic, thanks. Although, I do kind of see where this is coming from:

It's kinda funny how Cameron is praised as true autuer, visionary, original, etc. There's not really that much originality in his movies. They're all sequels (Piranha 2, Aliens, Terminator 2), remakes (True Lies), shameless rip-offs from better sci-f writers (Terminator, Avatar) and based-on-a-true-events (Titanic). Only exception from the rule is The Abyss and that was a piece of crap.

But, ya know, a lot of people do shitty sequels. He at least makes cool sequels that advance the overall story-line, so to speak.

Avatar didn't really rip anyone off.

Sure, it was kinda Dances with Wolvesey, but really, there's only like 10 stories in the whole world.

The story of guy infiltrates an alien society, gets to know them, then turns sides to protect them from the jerkasses isn't all that original.

Cameron's treatment of it though... Breathtaking.

That's the thing. Avatar was Dances with Wolves, it was Aliens, it was Jurassic Park and Independence Day and Ferngully, and dozens more. The film's influences were worn on its sleeve. But the magic of the film was how these disparate elements were filtered through Cameron's unerring sense of craft and spectacle, and woven together to create such a magnificent new whole.

It's rare for me to find a film that when I exit the theater, I have to talk myself out of purchasing another ticket to see the next available showing immediately. This is doubly true when the film is so lengthy and epic as Avatar. Had we not attended the 10:40pm showing (technically, had that showing not been the final of the night), Phe and I both would have gladly plunked down the money to go again.

I've seen a lot of films I thought spectacular this year. But none of them drew within me such a strong desire to revisit (in theaters, no less) as Avatar.
