I'm challenging myself to start working on human figure studies. ARGLABLRGLTHISISHARD. Ugh. There's so very much to learn. I'm not sure if my memory is even up to the task, but here we go anyway.

A few nude rough sketch/studies to get started:

Also, in furtherance of redeeming myself for that terrible attempt at a from-memory portrait of my mother, I did this portrait sketch back in September and totally forgot about it:

Far from perfect, but I feel at least slightly less incompetent for having made it :p

I've been doing a lot of a figure drawings. There wouldn't be much point in dumping them all here, but this is the 1-hour session I did today (via pixelovely.com). Ten 30-second gestures, four 1-minute gestures, two 5-minute poses, one 11-minute pose, one 30-minute pose.

Again, NSFW:

http://imgur.com/a/JJv6x

I've been told I'm exaggerating the length of the waist a bit. I'll have to work on that. There are so many parts to try to hold in proportion to one another. It's going to take a lot of practice to build up a good mental recollection of even just essential anatomy.

Still, in consideration of the learning cliff that is human figure drawing (and how shortly I've been at it), I'm pretty happy with the outcome of this session.

At some point I really need to start doing a bunch of simplified skeletons in imagined poses.

I got roped into doing a one hour pony drawalong challenge this morning. The challenge: darkness. Use only dark tones and a single light tone to create your composition. No midtones.

This was what I came up with:

Image

It turned out better than I thought it would. Thinking fast and working by course correction rather than thorough planning is difficult for me. I was a lot less panicky and scattered than I would have been 6 months ago.

I might work this up into something more complete.

Is that a pony corpse floating in the water?

Heh. No, it's just Luna enjoying a midnight swim. She's the princess of the night, you see.

...

Did I really just type that sentence?

And don't ask me where her neck went. I have no idea.

Ermergerd, it's not ponies!

Image Image

I haven't drawn in forever. This started as a basic figure drawing sketch and turned into a light/dark/contrast and fabric study because I could seriously use the practice.

... Okay, I lied. It's partly ponies.

I'm still trying to talk myself into attempting a human from memory. I'm probably getting okay(ish) with general proportions, but there's so... much... anatomy. And unless they're naked, so... much... draping.

I suppose it's silly to be afraid of it, though. If I try it and it turns out badly, well...so what, really? Rationally, I don't expect to be good at something I've never done before.

Dude, everything has ratios to one another. If you can draw one part of a human from memory, you can pretty much finish the rest.

One eye length inbetween the eyes. A foot is the same length as a forearm. A hand should nearly be able to cover the face. Waist starts slightly above half way, and arm span should nearly match height.

The details within those proportions are very iterative. Do whatever you want and change it if you don't like it.

Maybe something in plate armor? No draping there. Your renditions of the redhead above are quite nice.

Dude, nobody said you can't do a naked ranger.

Well, here's an almost naked guy for you, anyway. And a gun is kinda like a bow, right?

"Full" size. The original is actually 5k x 5k, but trust me you aren't missing anything at 2k x 2k.

Human figures, a couple of hands and a foot.

I took the plunge and drew these from imagination, with a couple exceptions. I posed my own hand and studied it for about 10 seconds before drawing the "claw" hand. For the left figure, I did all the initial drawing, and later decided to turn it into a musculature study. I used multiple references to overlay muscles on my original sketching. The final contours include some minor adjustments from the muscle study, but mostly that's just a matter of refinement.

Your feet are a tad short. Remember, heel to toe should be the same as wrist to elbow. Actually I think your feet might be okay, and the forearms may be a bit long.

Probably a little of both. The feet got reworked several times, and the more you do that, the more things shrink. I'm not sure exactly why that it happens, but it does.
