I always find these amusing, but I just came across some pretty amazing ones.

Every once in a while you find a law that has been on the books in a city for decades or even centuries that has been obsolete for a very long time.

For instance, in Toronto, which is larger than every city in the USA except for NYC, LA, and Chicago, it is illegal to drive cattle down Spadina avenue. That gets a chuckle from torontonians, because there's no cattle within 50 kilometers of spadina avenue, but it's still on the books.

I just encountered a pair of (unverified) municipal bylaws in the UK.

Apparently, in Chester, there is a law dating back to medieval times, that allows any Englishman to use a crossbow to shoot at and kill any Welshman within the city walls if they are seen out after midnight.

In York, it is legal to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow, except on Sundays.

Heh. A guy I work for actually owns a home in Chester.

What's funnier is that Chester is actually IN Wales...

Well yeah. Dollars to donuts the law originated when Chester was under occupation by the English, and refers to a curfew meant to inhibit resistance from organizing and meeting.

As such, it would probably be stranger if it were a law in England proper.

It is evidently illegal to hunt whales in both Utah and Nebraska.

I recall reading a while back that Massachussets had a law requiring church-goers to carry firearms to church. It supposedly dated back to before the founding of the Union, when Indian raids were a thing.

Apparently in California women can't drive whist wearing a housecoat.

If it's anything like around here, Cali could fix its deficit by enforcing that.

I almost forgot. In Ohio, there is an obscure law requiring any truck carrying 5 or more Christmas trees to have a bill of sale stating where the trees were obtained. Despite my best efforts, I was never able to find any contraband Christmas trees to impound. :(

There is actually a logical reason for this law, if anyone wants to take a guess.

to prevent people from deforesting the state parks for profit? Either that or Emerald Ash borers.

We're also supposed to use our horn to signal a pass, (unless they finally took that off the books), but no one enforces this and when I did it the first time in drivers Ed, the instructor looked at me like I was weird. and basically said you don't need to do that.

Yeah, it's to keep people from topping pine trees and selling them as Christmas Trees. It must work too, because I haven't seen a "topped" tree since like 1985.
