Anyone who thought the state would be the last to recognize and allow legal marriages between same-sex couples, as of Friday they are all wrong. It was federally forced. And there have been lines in county clerks' offices all morning to get a license. Utah county (the most conservative county) is "still waiting on confirmation" which I don't think they can legally do.

Congrats to all who are getting married. I know of at least three couples that I may be attending receptions for.

I'm happy for them. I'd be more impressed if the state's populace had voted that way.

Yeah, it's pretty sad.

But I am happy for my friends, especially one in particular that I've known for 20 years. He got officially married to his husband this morning. He is nothing but the nicest of people and him being kept from a basic human right simply because it destroys homophobic erections, is terrible.

He tried it "their way" for most of his life. Went to church every sunday. Went on a 2 year mission. Dated many a girl and even had a long term serious relationship with one. And throughout it all, he was miserable and very depressed. He finally shed the lies about 5 years ago and is now much happier and far more balanced. Even his entire family has come around and fully supports him (and it was awesome seeing them proud and happy for him at his wedding).

I don't understand why people would want to keep him from being happy if he's not hurting anyone else.

But, it all ends well. He even got to be on the local news (which I sadly missed). I am guessing he was interviewed by another good (gay) friend of mine's husband (a popular local anchor).

That's okay. As long as Wyoming doesn't legalize same-sex marriage, I think we're okay.

This. A good result from a bad method. If it had been a state court, that would have been immeasurably better, but this is eventually going to force itself on the USSC which has wisely avoided the issue one way or the other.

I thought prop 8 was already struck down by the USSC.

No, it was struck down by a district court. The Supreme Court only ruled that the parties defending it did not have standing, either in front of the USSC, or the 9th circuit (which at least had the benefit of keeping it at the lowest level of Federal courts.)

Yeah, I don't want to see it made legal by the courts. I'd much rather see referendums.

Considering what happened in california, I think the "popular vote" tactic wont be used.

Legislative change is also good.

Changing through the courts is only effective on constitutional grounds at the USSC level. If you can pull that off, great. Otherwise, your just begging to have your favorable verdict overturned by some ignoramus with a gavel in hand, confederate flag and crucifix behind him.

(Okay, maybe that last bit doesn't apply as much in Utah, neither being a confederate state nor using the crucifix. it's the spirit of the statement that applies.)
