...which explains a great deal. I was trying to figure out why any object would linger in the vicinity--The odds of an object having a velocity to enter an (admittedly unstable) orbit around earth --its a very narrow range of velocities that would allow such a thing.

It's a real picture (it's on Wikipedia under Solvay Conferencde), but it looks like it's a colorization of the photo.
