ARS goes hands on with Samsung's first Tizen device. Samsungs first step towards getting out of bed with Google

THe article is pretty long, so I won't quote it. The TL;DR is that they've made a phone that looks and feels nearly identical to a Samsung Galaxy device using an OS that looks and feels very much like Android, without the Google presence.

Of course not having access to Google's apps will be a big hurdle to overcome. Maps, Gmail, GoogleNow, Youtube, and other native google apps are a huge part of the android experience. It's going to be challenging overcoming that.

The phone prior to the first Tizen only phone will be the last Samsung Device I buy. In fact, that may push me to Windows Phone should the Nokia devices remain compelling.

I don't think you have to worry about that for a while. They won't be abandoning android any time soon.

They probably won't even commit their top hardware tier until it has decent market penetration, which would require more compatibility with existing android apps.

That's a relief. I still don't know why they're doing it. Look at Win Phone and Blackberry. They have like zero market penetration. I see Tizen going the same way.
