My work is going to start a "biggest loser" come January. I've been looking for a good excuse to go back to a low-carb lifestyle again, and this is as good an excuse as any.

Here's my dilemma. A part of me is tempted to gain as much weight as I can before the initial weigh-in, since there is a pot of money involved for the winner. Since I'm not terribly large, my percentage of weight lost will be much smaller. So, gaming the system would help in my favor. :twisted: Although my wife may not like that idea. "Oh... uh.... This is just holiday weight. From the holidays. And such."

Either way, I look forward to losing weight again.

I don't get the "percentage of weight" thing on these. Doesn't that make it basically impossible for the actual fat people to have any chance? You have to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound regardless of how fat you are, so that just means a 400 pound person has to work twice as hard as a 200 pound person to hit the same percentage. It's probably even worse than that as the 200 pound person is in much better shape and simply has the physical ability to exercise more than the 400-pound one.

No, it makes it easier for fat people. When you're already not fat, you don't have as much fat to lose and are more likely to lose muscle, if you can even force yourself to lose anything without just starving yourself.

It's much easier for a fat person to lose weight than a skinny person.

Well, you got me there. When we did biggest loser at work the winner was a 190 lb woman that dropped down to 145. None of the legitimately fat people got anywhere near 30% and there was quite a bit of grumbling over the percent thing.

More likely it has to do with the level of motivation and effort than anything else. Also, a 190 pound female would be fairly fat unless she was pretty tall. Not a lot of people are fat due to exclusively medical issues.

The percentage thing isn't perfect, but the only alternative that isn't complicated (at best) to implement is the absolute number of pounds, which BLATANTLY favors overweight people, and males. I could lose 10 pounds without batting an eye; if my wife did she would be dangerously skinny.

190 to 145 lbs is a pretty huge change, I'm having trouble comprehending how you could complain about that person winning.

I'm not complaining, I didn't even participate. I'm 6'1" and 165lbs, if I start losing weight I'll be dead pretty quickly. I was just confused because there was a lot of grumbling about the percent thing vs. using absolute weight.
