Not sure if anyone else saw this today, but it looks like (some, all?) Amazon users are getting $50 off a Kindle, or $75 off a Paperwhite, bringing the prices down to $19/$44, respectively.

I'd avoided getting an e-reader, but at that price point am seriously considering it.

I can't sing enough praise over my paperwhite. It has but one function, but it does that function 1000x better than a tablet.

Actual conversation I had with a friend while camping in the middle of the day:

Me: "Yeah, one thing I like about it is that I can sit here in the sun and read it with no glare."
Him: "I don't have any problems with my Kindle Fire either. Let me go get it and show you."
*Pulls it out, can't read a damn thing... tons and tons o' glare*
Him: "Oh."

I wonder if I can hack a Paperwhite to run the Nook Android app... The notion of repurchasing my whole library if Nook goes under isn't very appealing.

Try managing your library with Adobe Digital Editions to move DRM-protected content among different devices, or Calibre with the DeDRM 3rd-party plugin to strip DRM completely. It's how I moved my books from my old Sony Reader to my new Nook Simple Touch.

On the other hand, if you're not considering switching because you really want the Kindle form factor, Best Buy is selling the Nook Simple Touch for $49.99 right now.

edit : forgot to mention - Calibre does format conversions, allowing you to turn all your .epubs into .azw3s

Well I guess that option can be crossed off the list, then.

So, yeah - Using Calibre to remove DRM from your books and convert them to the AZW3 format will allow you to migrate your entire library without having to re-purchase anything.
