There was the big hoopla over that Bundy dude supposedly saying some insensitive remarks. Now there's the Clippers owner.

Why do people freak out when they figure out old people are racist? I don't get it. Sterling (Clippers owner) was what, 40 at the time of the civil rights movement? I've met very few people in their 60s that are racist to any significant degree. Nearly all late 70s and 80s people I have met are much more so. Particularly black men, but that may just be that they feel more comfortable vocalizing it.

Seriously. Think about what they grew up through, and cut them some slack. No, you don't have to let them oppress anyone, but do you really expect to change an 80-yr-old's mind? Just shake your head and move on, Christ.

In Sterling's case in particular, he was recorded making remarks to his girlfriend in private. Who cares. And yes, he seems to have a history of racism that has impacted people, but those are separate issues that have been resolved.

And no, it is not lost on me that I'm lumping a group of people together and setting a separate standard for them.

he is allowed to have his opinion no matter what it is or how distasteful it is to others. people are allowed to associate or refuse to associate with him. what bothers me is all of the vocal critics who are unwilling to get their own hands dirty and boycott him, and would rather have some third-party authority figure dole out punative justice in their name.

if you don't like what he said then don't go to the games, don't buy that teams merchandise, if you work for him call in sick, etc. Im tired of lazy activism where people think a click or comment or a like will change things. It doesnt, its vapid and meaningless, and is only serving to stroke the ego.

All I can think is that without the tornado outbreak, it was a pretty slow news day. Why else would people care what some old guy said behind closed doors, that in absolutely no way will ever affect them? Isn't "Aging Rich D-bag Cheats On Wife, Then Gets Blackmailed By Mistress" a little bit of a tired headline by now?

My question is: Does the NBA have a nice, vaguely written conduct rule that allows the league to penalize team owners for things like this?

Because there's nothing illegal about having despicably racist views. There's nothing illegal about sharing those same despicably racist views. But the league can set whatever rules for membership that it sees fit; it's a public entertainment medium that must protect its own interests, and the bad publicity for ignoring something like this would hurt them.

I question official legal sanction - i don't see that any laws are being broken. It all depends on how much authority the NBA really has here.

It has as much as the owners give them....

So, yeah, it's tricky. There's 30 owners I believe. The NBA head thus has 30 bosses. It's probably safe to piss one of them off, but if they overstep they could create a problem for themselves.

Taly:

Not nearly enough authority to relieve him of his property.

They can, however, fine him up to $2.5m and give him a lifetime ban.

I don't support his remarks, nor do I decry the NBA's decision. However is nothing private? No one has ever said anything in confidence that probably shouldn't see the light of day? Should a person be deprived of their property (being forced to sell it is close enough to being deprived) simply because of his opinion. I don't know, something about this bothers me, it seems slimy and underhanded.

That's where I am at. If Lebron James was on tape saying he hated white people or women or gay people or whatever does anyone realistically think he'd be facing a lifetime ban from the NBA?

Charles Barkley has been on the record public stating that he hates white people.

that's "different." Somehow.

Edit: Actually, I know how.

The remarks of Lebron James or Charles Barkley didn't have the potential to cost the NBA a big pile of money.

I'm not saying that sarcasticly -- pro-sports are a business. They fight the battles that make financial sense to fight, and don't fight battles that will cost the league money.

Neither did Sterling. The NBA gets it's money from it's TV deals, and the fan base isn't going anywhere. This is simply capitulating to a mob of bullies and race baiters because it's politically expedient.

The potential for lost revenue is much greater because of the mob of bullies and race baiters. They're capitulating because goodwill and reputation and everything else that's tied into "Public Relations" has a real effect on revenue. Nobody cares if Lebron hates fags or Barkley hates crackers, because frankly those are pretty common attitudes among African-Americans in general. Nobody's going to be so oppressed as a black homosexual with a white boyfriend.

I like how nobody's bothered to consider that owning a team in a sport wildly popular among black people, where 90% of the players are black, might cause problems for you if you hate niggers.

It's only a problem if you get caught.

So you're saying that it's exactly the same as banging fat chicks?

Sure - meanwhile, he was about to be given his second award by the NAACP for his philanthropy.

Eh I'm not so sure about this. "Bullies" is pretty much the only reason why satire of Islam is completely nonexistent in Western media. You can't tell me there's no media outlet that wouldn't make money doing it. Anyone that was going to stop watching South Park due to offensiveness stopped watching 10 years ago, but they still won't let them touch Islam at all.

I agree with the punishment.

The Donald Sterling thing is not about First Amendment rights. The Government is not mandating the sale of the Clippers. Sterling agreed to the bylaws of the NBA that include language to provide for the exact penalty that he is suffering. Under the "Conduct Detrimental to the League" heading, the NBA is legally within their rights to force the sale of the Clippers and ban Sterling from ever having anything to do with the NBA ever again.

The First Amendment only prevents the *Government* from penalizing speech. The NBA is a private organization that can do exactly what they have laid out in their bylaws to excommunicate this bigoted, racist *******. They don't need to worry about the "legality" of the recorded communication because they're not the Government. The recording exists, it was released to the public, Sterling said those things.

He now has to suffer the consequences. As he should.

The NBA does, but the Clips get some of their money from their sponsors... who were leaving in droves. Sterling is toxic, has been for years apparently.

Bullies are one thing.

Radical assholes prepared to murder you, your family, and your dog over an imagined slight against their "prophet" is completely another.

I said it was slimy and doesn't sit well with me, not that it was illegal. They are different things. If I were an nba owner, I might have to abstain from that vote, but that's me.

Nah. There's a much easier way to get out of not having your Ownership stripped and fined.

Don't be a racist, bigoted cockbag.

And would you want to be the only owner abstaining, tacitly endorsing said cockbag's vile hatefulness?
