Slythe! Have you been playing on PC? I'm about 32 hours in (over 120 hours if you count the ps3 as well) and farming end game atm in preparation for NG+

Yes, on the PC. I'm still on my first play through. I've basically been trying to 'over level' myself and over buff my weapons, anything to make the boss fights easier. I'm not above cheesing them in whatever ways I can. The game's still challenging enough for me. I think I'm about SL135 and
Spoiler:
I've just cleared Iron Keep and beat Dear Freja. All I have left is the path through The Gutter and wherever that ends, and then on through Drangleic Castle and that final path. I was trying to farm titanite chunks for weapon upgrades but I've exhausted all options except joining the damn bellbros which I refuse to do - at this point it's all experienced PVPers who kick my ***. I'm considering using ascetics in certain areas for more chunks but I plan on playing NG+ so I really don't want to make any areas even more difficult for myself.

If you can handle one NG+ difficulty jump, you can handle them all. Numbers just get higher. I have used 5 or 6 ascetics now.

One benefit to using ascetics is that you get NG+ rewards, but some encounters don't change unless you actually restart your entire game in NG+. For example, some bosses get adds during the fight that weren't there the first time, they don't show up if you use an ascetic.

Hold off on farming until you're past Drangleic castle, there is a loot candyland later on called

Spoiler:
Dragon Aerie
that has a ton of ground drops and 6-7 crystal lizards.

Sweet! Oh I also finally finished the game and killed all the optional bosses. I'll start NG+ at some point.

Smelter Demon? People consider him one of the harder bosses for some reason.

Revisit his room after beating him for a surprise and a nice ring.

Is this PC port better than the last?

Orders of magnitude better, but there is a weapon durability bug that makes your weapons break down faster at higher FPS :(

Orders of magnitude better may not be sufficient based on your comment.

The first PC port was bad enough I'm only marginally considering this now. Last I checked, you still can't aim ranged weapons on the PC port of the first.

You can aim ranged weapons here, but you can't zoom them like you used to.

DS2 is a night and day improvement over DS1 on the PC as far as performance and graphics. The mouse/kb controls are garbage still, so controller recommended. There is still a mod community for graphical changes, many of which look great.

Durability bug is manageable, moreso if you're one of those silly people willing to cap their FPS.

Sounds like a pass, then. Thanks for the information.

This is.. I..

There are no words.

I mean, ****. At least back in the Wing Commander days, I can understand why one might couple speed and animations to frames displayed, causing hilariously impossible asteroid fields that make the game unplayable on modern systems without artificially slowing the CPU. Why is durability code even in the same zipcode as frame output?

I can only assume that durability takes a set hit for every frame that your weapon is in contact with another object.

I've played and own the first game. The difficulty doesn't bother me. The quality control on my preferred platform does.

I've played the 360 version of Dark Souls, which suffers from none of the crippling gameplay flaws of the PC version. And, mind you, not being able to effectively aim or use ranged weapons in the PC version is a CRIPPLING flaw.

What you've said about this one leads me to believe it's not ready for the platform I want it on. I don't own a console at all anymore.

I'm not saying you're a wuss because you're scared of the difficulty. The game is certainly playable with mouse/kb, even without changing bindings. I think you mistook my comment as being about the kb/m controls, but I meant you can't zoom with anything like you did in DS1. It isn't a control issue, it's a change in mechanics.

Khross,

I was a big-time hater of DS1. I still will not go back to that turd.

DS2, however, is quality and runs great. I have a 4 year old box (AMD quad-core 3GHz and an update Radeon 6970) and the game runs silky smooth. I can't think of a single time I encountered a framerate hit. I think the durability bug may have gotten to me the other night, but I was kinda swinging swords at walls trying to find hidden doors (a video I watched tricked me into thinking I had to attack rather than push A on the controller).

Come and get your die on.

I don't play games like Dark Souls with a mouse and keyboard. Wired 360 controllers exist for a reason.

Well now I REALLY don't know what control issues you're talking about because I'm pushing over 200 hours in DS2 now with a 360 controller.

I'm talking about the PREVIOUS game, still. However, the durability issue and other comments leads me to believe that Dark Souls II would not meet my extremely high standards for action games.

The durability issue is really a non-issue. I had one [30 durability] weapon break the first day I played on PC due to the bug and not a thing since through 100 hours. You can restore durability through death, bonfires, items or spells. Other than that, DS2 is a step above DS1 in pretty much every way that matters. At this point I'm not sure if I could go back to DS1.

This is the ARPG of 2014, Khross. Don't do yourself a disservice. The two DLC add-ons have been great so far and we've got the third (final?) coming this month.

Lenas:

That may be so, but you're also speaking to someone who thinks the most redeeming feature of the entire Mass Effect series was ME3's multiplayer until EA just dropped support for the campaign rewards.
