Grouse purchased one yesterday and insisted I come and take a look at it with him. The nephew showed up as well. The three of us spent a few hours playing Nintendo Land, the multi-game tech demo that is shipping with most console bundles.

It's a fun little set of games, several with multiplier simultaneous play, and several that are single players. The game has a mode where the single player games can be played a competition mode with each player playing through a level for the highest score.

The games that make up the disc do a good job of showcasing some of the merits of the tablet/controller concept. Having a screen that only one player sees opens up some interesting multiplayer possibilities that aren't possible. In the Luigi's mansion game, the tablet player takes the role of a ghost, whom the players can only see on the TV screen when they shine their flashlight on him. The concept is repeated in Mario Chase, but the games have different tone and pacing.

The game we were most interested in this set was the Metroid one. It's a fun little level objective based FPS. The tablet player gets to run a hunter gunship while the Wii-mote players go split screen as hunters. They must all work together to make the objective (usually killing enemies). The Kraid battle was excellent, requiring good coordination between the gunship and the hunters.

The other game he picked up is called Monster Hunter Ultimate 3, a port of a 3DS title. The game only uses the tablet controller features for menu purposes, but allows for WLAN multiplayer between 3DS and WiiU clients. The local multiplayer is cool, gettting help to run quests is useful.

It occurs to me the games and features we used yesterday on the WiiU are the ones that the other console makers are not interested in using/developing. I can't think of a Sony or Microsoft title that would allow 2 adults and a ten year old to play together, let alone be interesting to both demographics.

Maybe that's not what you're looking for in a console gaming experience. I'm cool with that. It's just worth pointing out that Nintendo does it well even when they don't have competition in the field.

Users are going to be slow to adopt the Wii U because most of the target audience are more casual players who don't yet see the need to buy a new console. The demographic that will buy a new console because it's a new console and that's what you do when a new console comes out are mad at Nintendo for focusing their development on play experience and user interface rather than graphics during the previous console generation. That's fine. They were never the target audience in the first place, they just haven't realized it.

As for developers, it's always hard getting major studios to break away from their standard model. They know how to write code for a controller, and they don't want to devote resources to learning how to utilize a new control scheme.

Quite frankly, the tablet controller is **** amazing. It's all of the best qualities of the DS on a living room console. Something as simple as not having to pause the game to see where you are on the map (the full map, not the mini-map in the corner of the TV screen) has a huge impact on player enjoyment.

I'll piggy-back on this thread as it's probably more positive in tone than the EA WiiU one, and 3 WiiU threads on the front page of the Gaming subforum would be rather.. unwarranted, given its Glade penetration.

I just had to hop in here and note that Nintendo landed MegaMan as a playable character in their new Smash Bros. game (for the WiiU and 3DS). For as much flak as Nintendo gets for leveraging the same few franchises over and over again... way to sell me on a game purchase, Nintendo.

I've been quite impressed with my WiiU as a console. It's the console that Nintendo really needed to release instead of the Wii, so they're now essentially a generation behind everyone else, but still.

The problem with the WiiU is the problem Ninty's had since the Gamecube era: they've alienated third-party developers so much that they're not going to draw in anyone but the Nintendo faithful. The WiiU doesn't even have the Wii's "hey look at Grandma fake-bowl" gimmick, so it seems as though the WiiU has died before it even got out of the gate...but maybe Nintendo can turn it around, as they haven't done for the last two generations.

Nintendo has, of course, great first-party IPs, but without the gimmick of the Wii, they're going to seriously struggle to get the WiiU into the world's hearts (and living rooms). It's a shame; the console itself has a great deal of promise. But a game console has to have games, and that's going to be the dealbreaker.

I think it's ultimately a non-issue. Nintendo's relationships with third parties have been tenuous at best since the Nintendo 64. They've been riding revision coattails of their big IP's forever, and people will continue to buy Nintendo consoles just to get those few first party games. Nintendo is definitely not at the high point they had with the Wii, but they'll be fine, they're still turning profit, and they'll be back next time with hopefully a real competitor.

Or they'll figure out a new gimmick. Whichever.

You're absolutely right Farsky.

You guys won't believe and I wish I had the presence of mind to screen capture it, but my iPhone just tried to correct Farsky to Darksiege.

If I can move past that but I don't know if I get the addition of wii trainer lady and animal crossing guy. However Mega Man pretty much sells it.

I'm not including MMOs in this list. I'm counting games that piqued my interest before they were released, not just games I happen to find because I own these consoles. I'm also not dealing with mobile/handheld gaming either. I also realize this is my list, based on my preferences/biases

Analysis:
1. Wow I haven't realized that I've played so many games in the last 3-5 years....
2. I've been able to pick most my interested titles out of the Generational gamosphere on a Wii and a PC, along with playing a smattering of PS3 Games on my brother's PS3 (one of which I could have gotten on PC). A couple of titles have slipped through my fingers, but there's a lot of other great games I've gotten to play on the Wii and the PC that I'm not including on my list because those are just games I've stumbled into without being hyped up about in advance.

Picked up Mario Kart 8 since you can get it for $50 and get a free download of one of the following: New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, or Wii Party U.

Now I just need to hook my Wii U back up...and hope I still have all of the pieces...

Mario Kart 8 is a return to form after a disappointing Mario Kart Wii. I've been rather thoroughly enjoying it with my brother.

I'm so tired of Nintendo's 1st party IP, that it kind of matters that they have no 3rd party support.

Skyward Sword was disappointing and the SMB games have mostly been feeling tired and lifeless. They chug some IP out too fast and ignore IP that's been unused forever.

IMO, the people running the show are out of touch.

The decision to freeze completed games, especially coming from Ubisoft, is a stark reminder of the position Nintendo finds itself in this year. It was Ubisoft that has been for years Nintendo's third-party champion. They supported the release of the Wii and its motion controls with Red Steel. When MotionPlus was released, Red Steel 2 came out to support that technology. And the release of Wii U came at the same time as one of the console's better third-party titles: Ubisoft's ZombiU.

But ZombiU didn't sell as well as Ubisoft had hoped, in part because of the low console sales numbers. That franchise now appears to be dead in the water, even for other platforms.

"I think it was so adapted to the Wii U so (bringing it to another platform) would be difficult to do," he said. "Maybe it will come to other platforms, but not as a full game. It was really developed for that type of machine."

Despite how low sales of the Wii U have seemingly impacted Ubisoft, Guillemot remains at least slightly upbeat about the possibility that the Wii U could turn around.

"Nintendo is really coming up with fantastic games," he said. "They could, with the right price and very good games, help the machine start selling."

What if, we asked, the Wii U never hits that point.

"It could never come out," he said. "It could come out on another format... "

So how long is Ubisoft willing to wait, is this the last year the Wii U has to prove itself?

"I think we have to wait for Smash Bros. to come," he said. "Smash Bros has always been a big, big property for Nintendo and for gamers. And we all know that there are lots of Nintendo fans that are waiting for big games to come. We know they are coming. We don't know if they will still be there. I think when I speak with the fans that come to E3 90 percent of them are crazy Nintendo fans. They really love Nintendo and the games they do."

Kart 8 is solid, it just feels short is all. Maybe that's just because they actually let you unlock stuff in multiplayer.

I also got to watch some Smash Tourney footage from E3. I can't believe we are going to have to wait another six months for this!

You've got the sling (which seems more popular in the modern era) for stuns and easy switch activation, and the Best new piece of gear in a decade, The Golden f'ing Beetle for 1337 item retrieval and advanced switch activation. I had as much fun as anyone throwing my boomerang around just because as a kid, but it's exclusion isn't the end of the world.

Both Skyward Sword and the new Zelda are disappointing because neither of them is using the superior, darker style of Twilight Princess.

okay. I can accept that if that's your premise. The darker style was nice, for twilight princess, but it's not a direction I felt the series should go permanently. I really felt that Skyward sword was a return to form more in the feel of OoT and LttP after a decade of experimenting with a variety of ideas, including the dark and macabre with twilight princess and Majora's mask.

I'm not a big Zelda fan (though since I already have NSMBU, I'm going to register for and download Wind Waker HD), but while I like both styles, the Wind Waker style I find particularly charming and will certainly age better.

I've had to resign myself to the idea that I purchased a Wii U solely for games using Nintendo's existing IPs, though (like the Wii, and the Gamecube, and and and...). I actually like the Wii U as a system, but...yeah. Still, at least Nintendo seems to have decided to actually bring it with their first-party offerings this time. Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and New Super Mario Bros. U have all been really strong, and some of their future stuff looks like stellar entries in their respective lines (Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Star Fox, mayyyyybe Hyrule Warriors).

Don't overlook Super Luigi U. The micro levels are surprisingly tightly designed little gems.
