So, I have mostly overlooked the second half of this board. Do you guys just all get together and play that game where one person says a sentence and the next person adds to it until you guys have some sort of story going? How do you know when the story is over? I don't get it.

No, never played them....well, tried to play something once at a friend's house about 10 years ago. I'm guessing it was a role playing game. We all had a sheet of paper and a die and thats about as far as we got because everyone was talking too much and not into the game.
Still have no clue how to play or what the appeal is.

Lots of others out there. Basically you take on the character of an adventurer, join a party of like minded folks and go have adventurers, earn experience points, loot, and sometimes reputation. A GameMaster designs the game and leads you through the adventure. You roll up a character, make up a personality and role play that character. For you I would suggest one of the classic types, an elven healer or a halfling rogue, from a classic D&D game.

This is where games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft came from. Some guy named Gary stole a bunch of information from a bunch of gamers and put together a box set called Dungeons and Dragons. This gave everyone a set of rules to start with. One of my friends wrote the Greyhawk campaign, which is one of the things Gary, and I am speaking ill of a dead man, stole with soft words and a release form a 17-year old kid didn't know any better than to sign.

The box set swept over the world of fandom like wildfire, Gary made and blew millions (up his nose). All of a sudden everyone was writing role playing games, most awful, some pretty good. That was 35 years ago, before you were a twinkle in someone's eye. That card game you like so much? Magic! Entirely derivative from role playing games.

Seriously, Nitefox hasn't explained any of this to you? You're not doing the equivalent of "What's Poker?" just before you bust everyone's ego and empty their wallets are you?

Join one of the games, you can get a lot of information off the net about some of the settings, especially the Star Wars ones.

The games here we do the posting equivalent of sitting around a table and walking through the adventure with the game master. Having played a few late night sessions here and there, it sometimes resembles the "so, should we wake Jon up so he can roll initiative against the red dragon, or just assume he died in the flame breath?" Times of the game.

Hahhahaa! I can play poker like a champ, but no, not role playing games. I like playing Magic, but I don't really see it as a role-playing game, its more like chess or something only cooler.
I'll have to ask Nitefox about it. Funny, I never thought to ask.

The cards of Magic are derived from the lands and creatures and monsters and elementals of fantasy role playing games. Someone once described Magic as either a strategic fantasy game without role playing, or a role playing game for people who didn't want to role play.

Yeah, I can just see you bending over just a little, showing NiteFox a little bit of skin, then taking his beer money away with a straight. Then again, he still wins.

Hmm Gary Gygax?..i have something called a dungeon masters guide and a players manual. Stuff my ex left.

The game part of the board intrigued me too, I've browsed through it , but I don't understand what it's about or how to do it either.

Yep, that is him. Now I do understand that the gaming world owes him a big round of thanks. I just wish he hadn't been so underhanded about the way he acquired the material. He claimed to write most of it himself when what he did was compile and edit. Most of the original 'contributors' refused to give him anything again, especially since he wasn't willing to pay them for anything, beyond perhaps an acknowledgment in the front of the book.

Future editions of 'his' works suffered greatly because he was a greedy bastard who wouldn't pay his writers.

Dave Arneson is another name from the early days, but he actually did write his stuff and was respected by the other game masters.

You need to find someone who knows how to run a game, or talk to one of the game masters here. The key is to put yourself in the soul of the character you create, learn the combat systems, then find creative excuses to do devastating damage to the appropriate random encounters.

But when you are level one - do not take "a giant rat" lightly.

Giant rats are a classic early encounter for new players. It allows them to learn the combat system against an opponent they should be able to beat relatively easily. Unfortunately some players roll dice poorly and get killed by this learning encounter.

While they should be easy kills they can be deadly if you are unlucky, stupid, or both.

Everyone knows what a rat is. By making them giant you create a loathsome foe you feel no qualms about killing. This gets you into the important headspace of killing for loot and experience.

Actually, this demonstrates an exceptionally clear understanding of the social dynamics of RPG gaming. In my experience, more than 60% of gaming circles roleplay just like that :D

I only played dnd for about a year, and that description fairly well matches our game playing too. :p What "roleplaying" we did was uh... not particularly of the serious sort.

Best part is you get to pick what rules apply and which can be ignored!

I was once in a fun campaign run by a serious gamer, but all of the players were women who had little experience gaming.

He had lots of conversations with his gamer friends that started up with, "You'll never believe what they did this time..."

The classic was, "White is good, so white dragons must be good." Of course, when you look at it as new adventurers learning the ropes, it was perfectly in character. So much D&D is metagaming - where the players already know what the monsters are from the description, and then know what they are susceptible to, etc.

If you want to understand pen and paper gaming, OoTS is the best webcomic that I can think of which would give you a brief insight into it, though Nodwick and FFN come to mind as well. Erfworld as well though that's an odd system at play.

You can get all of the rules for Dungeons and Dragons version 3.5(which, I believe, is still the most played version of the game and all of the dnd games played here on the boards are 3.5, though there are some other systems played here as well, none of them have legally available rules without purchasing them) there. Well, all of the basic rules you need to actually play the game.
