I am going to be taking the server down at 8pm on September 29 in order to upgrade the OS. I will have to re-setup the forum software. There SHOULDN'T be any issues with data integrity. The server should be back up after a few hours.

This due to the bash bug?

Doubtful, that doesn't require any kernel update or rebooting.

No, I already patched the bash bug, but doing that did remind me that I've been meaning to update the OS.

Guessing you're making the jump from 12.04 to 14.04?
Purging old packages can take a good while, most of the culprits are past kernels.

10.04 to 14.04 >_>

The "upgrade" is actually a reinstall of the vm. The majority of the work will be reinstalling the packages and setting up the mysql and apache configs and data.

Man, I thought I had procrastinated when I updated a 12.04 system this past week.

I guess they don't let you spin up a new vm, transfer your data, swap IPs, and shut down the old one?

When I upgrade, all the existing files will be moved to a saved partition, do we shouldn't lose anything.

If you can read this, the server update is complete. At least, the board is back up.
