Dammit, now she has to explain the difference between "Marquis", "marquee", and "marque".
Noblemen, tents and cars, oh my.

Worst part is they all sound completely different.

Mar-kwis, mar-key, and mark. ;)

Ok I feel kind of dumb that I don't know these.

No. They're all three different.

*Technically*, there's two pronunciations of Marquis.
mar·quis
ˈmärkwəs,märˈkē
noun
(in some European countries) a nobleman ranking above a count and below a duke.
another term for marquess.

mar·quee
märˈkē
noun
1.
NORTH AMERICAN
a rooflike projection over the entrance to a theater, hotel, or other building.
modifier noun: marquee
"a marquee player"
2.
BRITISH
a large tent used for social or commercial functions.

and

marque
märk
noun
a make of car, as distinct from a specific model.

Building my first computer was one of my fondest nerd-memories. My opinion is you should fully support that endeavor.

The only reason "mar-kwis" is an acceptable pronunciation anywhere is enough ignorant English speakers pronounced it wrong that it stuck.

Mar-kee, on the other hand, is never an incorrect pronunciation for Marquis. It's a loan-word from another language, the correct way to pronounce it is always the same as the other language.

There's also the Maquis. (mah-kee) From Star Trek.

And English is the language that mugs other languages in a dark alley and rifles their pockets for vocabulary. Of course there's different pronunciations ;)

I never knew about the "markwis" pronunciation until I played Final Fantasy XII and I thought all of the voice actors were idiots.
