I don't tend to install beta previews because they like to expire and force me to reimage when I don't buy the eventual full version.

I never buy ms operating systems back to back. Their pattern is always "beta test (but call it full release) one os, then release a better written and tighter one after."

95 -> 98
2000 -> xp
Vista -> win 7

By all accounts with win10, the pattern is holding.

The new series isn't following the pattern. Into darkness was a mess. Or maybe they decided to start with nemesis in the new counting continuity.

Windows 10 event is going on right now, and the updates are pretty bad ***.

• DirectX 12 will use half the resources.

• Internet Explorer is being replaced by "Project Spartan."
• Fable has been shown being played cross platform, multiplayer on Windows 10 and Xbone at the same time.
• Streaming of Xbox One games to any Windows 10 PC or tablet in your home later this year (like PS4 with the PS TV, but better).

• New hardware, the Surface Hub - 84" multitouch, pen-input, dual camera, business display

• Microsoft HoloLens, basically Google Glass on steroids, looks amazing. I am a little bit speechless right now. It's Glass, Kinect, MS IllumiRoom and more all built in to a single wireless, device-independent device. Just... I don't even know. It's crazy. They have been working with NASA to use this tech and control the rover on Mars in a recreated holographic environment.

I'm intrigued. If they are able to pull off half of these things, I will be happy. Can't believe it's gonna be a free update. That's hella awesome!

And, I agree, HoloLens looks un-fracking-believable! I'm curious how expensive it will be.

I finally got a chance to read through the fairly extensive Wired article that's floating around, which goes into a little detail about what's in the HoloLens... and wow, that might actually qualify as rendering holograms, which surprised me.

We're living in futuretimes.

I know it's months late, but I feel moved to respond to a couple items from the 'Top 10' list:

    ... This. A million times, this. For all that Vista was an eldritch horror to work with on a daily basis, it had native support for "pipe music to my speakers while sending game audio to my headset". Why they dropped that feature in later OS revisions, I will never understand.

Entertainingly, I got the "opportunity" to install Win10 on a co-worker's laptop this morning and it went so smoothly, I've decided to put it on my home PC.

No comment, but it's not expected. MS isn't going to be paying licensing fees to sony to play it's disc format, they're just going to push streaming.

Buying blu-ray support as part of a 3rd party software package is fine with me.

I rarely play any blu-rays any more (in favor of streaming), and I'd rather not pay extra for the licensing built into the OS for something I'll likely never use.

If I decide I need that functionality, I'll buy it separately.

Er, yeah...I've been one of the biggest holdouts of physical media, and even I'm ripping all of my Blu-rays to my iTunes library, and only buying digital downloads going forward. So much easier, and the quality is virtually the same.

(Of course, I suppose it helps that I have 1 GB fiber at home, but still.)

Just use this to rip your legitimate blu-ray to your system, then it will play. http://www.makemkv.com/

Unfortunately, without buying a software package, blu-ray support is dead. On the upside, streaming is only getting better.

Apparently the field of view is pretty small :( Hopefully something that can be improved upon.

BTW here's the entire MS keynote on Windows 10 in 9 minutes, worth a watch.

Microsoft is making Windows 10 available for free to anyone who joins the Windows Insider program and installs the current build of Win10 to provide feedback. It will continue to be free after launch, tied to whatever Microsoft account you sign in with.

I am running the current build because of that, and I have to say, it's pretty. Pretty impressive. No longer does Windows feel like two separate systems, they finally got it right. Also using the new Edge browser ATM and it's pretty freaking fast. Every part of Windows feels much snappier, animations are nice, new start bar is nice, being able to switch between desktop and tablet mode will be super helpful for anyone with a touchscreen device. Windows update is greatly improved. One thing I just noticed is how much nicer text looks on my 40" 1080p screen, ClearType hasn't been too great in the past.

Cortana remembered her settings from my Windows Phone, which I haven't had in quite a while now. Commands with her have been hit or miss so far, but I think that my crappy webcam is more to blame here than she is. The natural voice detection works really well when it's quiet or I've got my office window closed.

So what does this all mean? The main thing it means is that we're not expecting clear communication from Microsoft about licensing any time soon. We don't imagine that there will be any technical difference: we expect that as previously described, Windows 10 installed via the preview will activate and show as genuine. It should be fully functional (no "non-genuine" watermark on the desktop or anything like that), and essentially indistinguishable from any other Windows 10 installation.

However, the positioning has changed. On Friday, this method of getting Windows 10 had a veneer of officialness to it. It was an explicitly documented way of getting Windows 10 that was activated and genuine for free. It isn't any more. That doesn't mean it won't work, but it's no longer completely above-board and officially authorized. This doesn't really matter to hobbyists and other home users who just want a free Windows for their self-built PC; that few million users will be able to sneakily get a free copy of Windows 10. But it does matter to corporations and organizations—groups who might be subject to a software audit. They won't be able to tell Microsoft "Oh yeah, we got Genuine copies of Windows by upgrading from the preview." And that's what Microsoft really cares about.

That's.. kind of unfortunate that there was the confusion, but not at all unreasonable.

Besides, it's not like I expect there were many companies still on XP or Vista that were like "Oh, let's move our entire company over to a beta product to avoid paying licensing fees for Windows 7/8 to get onto the free Windows 10 gravy train"...

I was ready to be pissed as I started reading that, because I, as somebody who owns a Windows 7 license for my personal computer, but wiped my hard drive to start cleanly on the Windows 10 preview build last year when it was introduced, would have been royally annoyed if I had to wipe *again* to install 7 so I could upgrade to 10 (and thus losing the actual clean installation, heh)... I'm glad *that's* not likely the case.

One nice thing that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere... Being able to set default save locations/drives for different kinds of media... One location each for photos, videos, programs, etc.
