I brought this up in another thread, but though it warranted it's own.

Lollipop is a huge improvement over previous version of Android, for lots of reasons.

ARS has a thorough review here
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/11/ ... ewed/8/#h6

This snippet summarizes what I like most about it (they are finally dealing with fragmentation by moving almost everything updateable to the play store)
ARS Technica wrote:
Google can now update so much of "Android" without having to push out an OS update, so major version releases like Lollipop mostly focus on the core OS. Google and third-party developers now have lots of new tools to work with, and in the coming months everyone will take advantage of them.

I am looking forward to using this on my new OnePlus One when it arrives Friday. After four years of Windows Phone, I am starving for something modern.

I'm excited enough for this I'm seriously considering sideloading it instead of waiting for Google's official rollout, since they've released the nexus images.

I want a nexus 6 with my lollipop.

(I'm not getting one. The nexus 5 is at about the right price point for a phone right now...)

I'm running a Nexus 5, I love it. Really disappointed that they chose to release the 6 at the idiotic 650$ pricepoint, instead of following their 5 pricing and making it more attractive than every other flagship smartphone out there.

Get a 64GB OPO for $349 like I did. Just got it out of the box and this thing is the bee's knees.

Lenas,

I'm curious about your experience with call/audio quality. I've heard there are quality issues with the microphone and speaker.

I have only had a single conversation on it so far, but they said it sounded fine, no noticeable difference to my Lumia 920. Haven't tried the speakers yet.

I spent most of yesterday afternoon reinstalling my Nexus 5 with lollipop. It's very colorful. The smart lock feature is what I have been looking forward to the most.

Sideloaded mine as well, really like the new design direction they're going in. As well, it seems nice and snappy on my Nexus 5.

I highly recommend the nexus root toolkit for Nexus devices, really made the process straightforward.

The Nexus 6 is still a great value compared to its competition. It blows away the iPhone 6+ in every single category, and yet comes in at $250 cheaper at the same storage capacity. Likewise, it's cheaper than Samsung's high end offerings, while competitive with them in every way. It's just that it's a high end device, and I think high end devices are a complete waste of money.

Midgen:

As a follow up I did some research and there's already a fix available for those with audio volume issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus ... e-t2835010

Still no issues with my calls on day two, AT&T network.

I haven't done a call on speakerphone yet but testing out music with the speakers maxed was louder than I'd ever normally want it. Will test a call after work.

This is part of it, for me. The other half is that I don't want a phablet. I've got a phone, and I've got a compact tablet. I like having both of them; they work perfectly for what I want. And something halfway between would work terribly for everything, for me.

Would I mind a Nexus 5 with a better camera and faster specs? No. I'd even pay a hundred or two more for it. I don't need a 6" monstrosity, though -- that's what my cheaper 7" monstrosity is for, and it still fits in my pocket. I wear my phone on my belt, because I don't always want a device in my pocket. And I don't feel ridiculous talking on my phone, but I would if it got much bigger.

Oh, hello, OTA update.

Also, Midgen, that pic is glorious.

I still haven't received my OTA's.

I have a 2012 Wifi only Nexus 7, and an 2013 LTE Nexus 7 that lives in my car.

As of yesterday afternoon, I don't think the update for the LTE device has even been published yet.

If I don't get the update on my 2012 tonight, I'm going to bring it to work and side load it tomorrow :p

OTA on my AT&T Nexus 5. Nothing on my 2013 Nexus 7, yet.

Midgen, have had a few calls on speaker now and they've all come through without issue. The internal volume of this phone seems to be higher than my previous phone also, because I've been having to set my car stereo volume around 25-30 where I used to have it at 40-50.

Right now, having had no issues, rooting and all, this is feeling like probably the best phone purchase I've made. Only downside is that the camera doesn't hold up to what I was used to with my Nokia, but I expected that.

Anybody have a Motorolla Moto X? I'm considering grabbing one when I upgrade, and they already have lollipop. I hear it's fairly close to stock android like the Nexus line...

FWIW, when the Moto X was first released, I was talking with some Googlers, and I asked them if they were going to upgrade to it. Resoundingly, they were sticking with a Nexus.

Let us know what you think Elmo. I'm looking to do the same next month, myself.
