The engines look silly. The interlocking wing sections are.. inoffensive, but not revelatory. Particularly since they're open in atmosphere.

I don't have an issue with the s-foils being spread in atmo. Similar to variable geometry wings in Modern fighters, I think of them more as spread for attacking and dogfighting, and closed for speed and reduction of spaceodynamic drag.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/S-foils

As for the engines, It could be they designed it that way for better visibility for the pilot to the rear. Note how the cockpit is raised a bit more than the T-65's? That should enable the pilot to see more around him. The T-65 likely had horrendous rearward quarter visibility. Kind of like driving a supercar with a tiny gunslit of a rear window. The new one is more like a porsche 911. ;)

I have to admit, Colbert's analysis actually does make me feel better about it:

While Colbert articulated what I figured (and I thought the crossguard firing up was badass), I did have to laugh at the (apparently unironic) choice of tweet for the butthurt crowd. It was a tongue-in-cheek post, from none other than Bill Corbett, who you may remember from his most famous role:

dang beat me to it. Alternatively the crosspiece could be made of lightsaber resistant metals which exist in the EU and may or may not be incorporated.

Edit: Aren't they mentioned in Kotor/Swtor which are still cannon.

Cortosis actually originated in KotOR, if my memory serves.

Cortosis is first mentioned in Stackpole's I, Jedi from 1998.

But either way it's mentioned in Kotor so it exists in the movie scope and could be used in the construction of the broadsaber

If there's a lightsaber-resistant material, why don't the Jedi and Sith (other than Vader) wear armor and/or carry shields made from that material?

Because Space Wizards can't wear anything heavier than cloth or they lose their class bonuses.

Rarity, AFAICT. It seemed to be more abundant in KotOR's era, when they would make swords and armor out of cortosis alloys.

In the recent stuff there just haven't been enough jedi or sith for the need. I sold it to the emporer and vader and....im out of customers and now dead.

Vader's armor is mostly effective in blocking Luke's saber in ESB. (As in he doesn't lose the arm when Luke hits it) I think it may have a cortisis component.

Remember too that the sith and enemies of the Jedi are few in this era. The vast majority of threats are not the light saber wielding varietyu

Remember vaders main job was jedi killing. He had reason to wear the stuff

IIRC, you can't fire the weapons when the S-Foils are closed. I know there are several atmospheric dogfights in Stackpole's X-Wing series, and the S-Foils were open for all of them. They closed them when the weren't engaged, to reduce drag, etc. But they were definitely open for the dogfights.

Regardless, I'm hella excited for this movie. Can't wait for it to hit the big screen. My kids are super-excited, as well.

Yeah, I like the new design too. It looks less '70s.

Just as I won't be sad if big moustaches, big sideburns, and big collars aren't prevalent either.

Get a modern monitor. That thing fit perfectly within my preferred window size's width.

66% of monitors are 1080p or lower resolution. On a 1080p monitor, this forum's design allows about 1260px width in the content area. That photo is 1527x2709.

Not everyone browses fullscreen. :p

I have three modern monitors, and width wise, it fits on all three if I had a fullscreen browser window.

At work I've got 1440x900 and 1080p. At home, 1080p, my only monitor is a TV.

My browser window is around 5:4, full height. I guess that makes it about 2000px wide...
