In a galaxy far far away....

I had a daughter. This was way back in the grunge scene of 1996. Now here I am: and in 11 hours and 45 minutes my little reason to live becomes 18 years old... holy crap, how time has flown by

I wish only the best to all you parents with pre-teens/teens. My son is 31 now. Not sure how we survived, but we did. My stepson and I had a bit more trouble, but we managed to get through it together to the point we love and respect each other. It can be done, just takes patience.

Good luck!

Amazing how time flies by. I look at my 5 and 2 year old and keep telling them to stop growing up so fast.

My son keeps telling me "I want to be as big and old as your are, daddy"

I keep telling him "Enjoy being a kid while you can. It's the best time of your life."

Is there where we ask if she is hot? I know someone has to ask that, this is the glade.

My oldest will be 22 in February.

DS, 18 is just starting to get over the hump of adolescent difficulty, trust me. In 2 or 3 years you'll likely have a whole new world of fun with your daughter before you.

Yes. However her personality is a little offputting. She's like an angrier, female Darksiege. Before he grew up and started taking his passivation enhancement tablets.

The maternal side of the family being "#ffffff 0111010001110010011000010111001101101000" does not help either. She is losing the angst now that she lives with me and Honi. But it is a slow process. Need to see how having her new job at the Vape Shop will work for her.

I am looking forward to taking her out for a few drinks on her 21st birthday.

I don't know if she's going to college or what, but with my daughter, she decided halfway through her sophomore year that she wanted to get an apartment with he girlfriend. I was initially opposed to this, but she went out and got a job, and has been paying for her own living arrangements ever since. In addition to saving me a lot of money, this has been immensely positive for being able to relate to each other. She's really getting a taste of what it's like to have to manage your life, and I'm seeing a lot more maturity from her than I had expected. It's amazing how much better our relationship is.

I spent a lot of time with my father as a child, and did many things with him. When I was sixteen, he took my birthday money and opened a bank account for me, taught me how to manage money, balance a checkbook, and not get screwed on overdraft charges. My relationship with my father was not poor by any stretch of the imagination.

Be that as it may, it would be monumentally ignorant of me to say that my relationship with my father hasn't improved dramatically during adulthood.

It's because you've lived long enough to see how small petty and pointless most of what you've held against them is. More so with my maternal grandfather. Part of that was him overcorrecting for his own boys and coming around when we turned out alright.

The thing with kids is, as they enter the teen years, they think they know better than you, the parent. As they start getting into adulthood and are working and paying their way they start to realize how dumb they were and how much they could have learned from their parents. Be patient and they eventually will come around. :)

(They always find out first-hand once they have kids of their own. :P)
