Quote:
Mayo-Clinic-Hospital

The Mayo organization had 3,700 staff physicians and scientists and treated 526,000 patients in 2008. It lost $840 million last year on Medicare, the government’s health program for the disabled and those 65 and older, Mayo spokeswoman Lynn Closway said.

Mayo’s hospital and four clinics in Arizona, including the Glendale facility, lost $120 million on Medicare patients last year, Yardley said. The program’s payments cover about 50 percent of the cost of treating elderly primary-care patients at the Glendale clinic, he said.

“We firmly believe that Medicare needs to be reformed,” Yardley said in a Dec. 23 e-mail. “It has been true for many years that Medicare payments no longer reflect the increasing cost of providing services for patients.”

Mayo will assess the financial effect of the decision in Glendale to drop Medicare patients “to see if it could have implications beyond Arizona,” he said.

Nationwide, doctors made about 20 percent less for treating Medicare patients than they did caring for privately insured patients in 2007, a payment gap that has remained stable during the last decade, according to a March report by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, a panel that advises Congress on Medicare issues. Congress last week postponed for two months a 21.5 percent cut in Medicare reimbursements for doctors.

Read the whole article here. The policy change only affects the Mayo clinic in Arizona, for now. Keep in mind, the decision to deny new Medicare patients comes before passage of Democrat plans to cut around $500 billion from Medicare.

How dare those greedy Dr's cut off patients in need! What about their oaths to drive themselves out of buisness.

Yes, because we need a violent revolution from the people tasked with preserving life. Excellent idea.

This is just another argument for a single payer health care system, or a national program.

There are a great many types of government run health care, all of which are superior to our current system in terms of per capita and overall cost, and quality of care. Currently, I support universal Medicare coverage over an NHS style program, simply because the bureaucracy for medicare is already in place, and because of the efficiency of the medicare program in terms of administrative cost. NHS would require a complete government takeover of the entire medical industry, and I simply think that's impractical for the US at this time. If the entire country had something akin to the VA system, that would be grand, I just don't see it happening.

If you look at other countries, there are a lot of different systems. Some use private exchanges in addition to *heavy* regulation of the industry to keep costs down and care quality high. Some have NHS style systems, where all medical workers are employees of the government. Some have combination plans of public and private funding mechanisms.

Who knows which would work best for our country, but any of them would work much better than the system we are drowning in today.

Respectfully, I didn't ask how A government run healthcare plan would be superior a public run plan, and I kinda feel that's the answer I got

My concern is that this government, this beaucracy that's running medicare (the same one you just said you'd like to control all heath care) is doing a poor job of satisfying it's creditors (the medial professionals). This is what the OP is pointing out.

Why let this beaucracy that's doing a poor job of pleasing its creditors (and in some places its clients) when it's running a smaller percentage of total, have control of a larger, or whole, percentage of the total.

Because the answer of the last two administrations has been to reward failure with bigger opportunities to screw up of course. Don't you see Medicare was a test run, now that they have all the bugs worked out Governmental health care will be perfect! And if you don't support it you are a race traitor, a horrible person, and so forth!

I'll take the fall for being a race traitor. I put in the call to Galactus months ago. We're done, come over, eat to your heart's content. Turn off the lights when you leave. His schedule has him here sometime late in 2012, just before Christmas I think.

You know, I try very hard to not comment on other people's typos (I don't always succeed, but trust me, you wouldn't like memuch if I made every snarky comment that came to mind). However, I was thinking the exact same thing.

I love that Medicare horrifically underpays doctors, and yet, still hemorrhages money and exceeds deficit predictions at every opportunity.

Medicare fraud is extremely high. Confidential sources which would get me fired if I quoted them have told me many cases end with doctors and their staff that were in on it paying most of the money back for a reduced sentence. Getting their ability to treat medicare/medicaid patients yanked when they get out is part of the deal. Usually the investigation of the fraud (does it really take them this long to notice and investigate) has let it get to over 5 million before they move in and arrest everyone. Usually, when it gets that bad most o fthe staff spends most of their time filling out fraudulent claims, nobody in the office is clean. That is one of the biggest reasons Medicare is so inefficient, they have to spend too much time going after fraud, protecting your tax dollars.

Medicare will die shortly as the legitimate doctors groups, insurance groups, and hospitals will have to start refusing medicare patients because they'll lose huge gobs of money on those patients. either that or charge a grand per tylenol.

Many doctors are getting ready for the "What? I can't refuse the patient? Just watch me. Go ahead, arrest me, charge me, sue me because I referred your charity case to County. Go ahead, I dare you" fight.

Yes, but I'm sure there's more than one acre of them.

I also know of doctors that perform additional tests/procedures for Medicare patients under the guise of being thorough because Medicare doesn't cover their costs. They have to charge for additional services to get close to breaking even.

I fail to see how a system that doesn't pay a fair value for services rendered is the answer we need. Perhaps the Pay Czar will step in and tell all the greedy doctors they make too much money. Never mind the fact that doctors forewent a huge amount of personal time just to become doctors, the $100-300k in loans they have to pay off as a parting gift, and the often ludicrous hours they have to put in when not in private practice.

What about this indicates that we should undermine the freedom of association?

This is a clear shot across the bow from Mayo to the government, IMO.

This is old news to me. My parents were huge fans of Mayo Clinic, but when my stepfather's Motorola retiree health insurance went away a couple of years ago, they went to Medicare. They were asking me about doctors that I worked with at my hospital, since Mayo was already reducing their Medicare patient loads even then.

To be fair, I'm sure Medicare patients don't really want mayonnaise spread all over them.

There's much better research being done across the street at the Miracle Whip Clinic anyway.

This is why we cant have nice things.

Total disaster in the making, and yet it will push forward and really you cant blame Democrats. At least not objectively. They know once it's in people will cling to it and you wont be able to pry it from their proverbial cold, dead hands. The same people will vote more and more money into it because hey, it's probably not their money anyway. It's the "rich" guy up the block making a whopping 25k more than them.

Change you can believe in.
