I'll just say: that the internet seems to forget just how much it protested the idea that the guy from A Knight's Tale and Ten Things I Hate About You was announced to play the Joker. Like, they REALLY hated it. People were clamouring for all kinds of crazy **** like "Bring Nicholson back instead" and what-not. I, at the time, was for it. I saw Ledger disappear into roles like he did in Brother's Grimm and Casanova. I knew he'd pull out something amazing. But I distinctly remember being in the minority.
I had no opinion about Ledger as Batman. Honestly, I thought it was the second best movie of that trilogy, anyway, (Begins was better) but Ledger's performance was fine.
Likewise, I have nothing against Ben Affleck. He may do a great job. I just can't shake the nagging suspicion that
it won't help.Every DC property WB touches has turned to ****. They have no concept of how to do the shared continuity across the multiple comic book properties that has made the Marvel Cinematic Universe so great. Oh, they
had an idea. Bruce Timm's DCAU did it absolutely perfectly. But they've never handled it well in live action, and they're actively screwing it up as I type, by doing stupid **** like preventing the Flash/Arrow writers from using Batman or Superman in their plots. They did it in the past by vetoing Bruce Wayne's planned appearance on Smallville. They're not showing any signs of correcting the issues in philosophy that allow for shared continuity between different properties. Okay, maybe one sign - the shared continuity of Arrow/Flash. But beyond that, they're still segmenting things. This new movie doesn't even change that. This is ONE property. They're doing a Superman sequel with Batman and Wonder Woman in it. They're not making a series of new Bat Man movies or Wonder Woman movies and linking them together to make the Justice League. They are afraid of linking multiple properties together, and they don't realize that that's what is making the MCU so appealling.
"Hey guys, remember Christopher Nolan's Batman movies? Everybody likes those, right? Well, except the third one. Well guess what! We're picking up an older, wiser, retired-er Batman in this one! But it's not actually part of the same thing. But if you want to carry over that goodwill, we certainly won't hold it against you! And hey, how 'bout that murdering Superman, huh? We know you love grim and edgy! That's why you loved
The Dark Knight but hated
Green Lantern, right, because it wasn't dark and broody? That must be it. We just want you to like us. And hey, Flash, amirite? 'Cept, uh,
not the one you know and like. That's currently seen every week. Oh, and women! Well, just one. Don't wanna go too crazy, but we'll throw her in there somewhere too. Please just
give us some of that sweet, sweet Marvel money see our movie."
