Up until last year in June, I worked at Cisco for $82k base salary. Then I joined another company, and now I'm leaving again for a new opportunity. My new base salary will be $120k at a startup, and the bonuses could become huge. Pretty exciting to me. And free lunch every day.

I feel mixed though because I actually like the people I work with currently.

I just yesterday told my boss of nearly 6 years that I'd be resigning to work from home for the same money, 15 less work hours per week and no more 70 mile round trip commute. It was hard but I feel good about it.

Is the lunch any good?

I think they order out every day and a different person gets to choose.

True, but I'll get to single handedly expand the 550,000 (and growing) user base to iOS so my e-peen will get pretty large.

My new job is a 10 minute drive instead of a 15 minute drive... I recently bought a condo in Waltham Mass. which seems like the perfect place to live for commuting, and it's surprisingly cheap.

Lex, that's awesome. Congratulations on the new job. Sometimes it's ok to chase the money, but money is a means to an end, not the end. Make sure you enjoy your job OR you are putting enough away to be able to get to the job you will enjoy.

Sounds like you are doing very well.

Thanks! And while that's true about money, if you don't take certain actions, it's the equivalent of spending money. And yes I have been saving up a lot also.

Watch out for the lunch thing, it's good in theory, but your waist line could get really big really fast... at least that's what happened at my last job where the majority of people enjoyed pizza >.<

You will find after a while though, that it's worth sacrificing monetary for working with people you enjoy.... of course then you get over that and get a job where you can work from home so you don't have to sacrifice the monetary... :neko:

Yeah, I'm starting to think money is kind of stupid anyways, at least when your income and savings are in the 6+ digits. There's more interesting things in life to focus on.

Also if you focus too much on money, your other skills won't improve as quickly, as it could make you act too conservatively. Ironically, the people who make the most money often are trying to accomplish something else and the money is mostly a byproduct.

Yes, well, enjoy the single life :)

It's frightening to think how much money I could put away if I were single, no kids.

I wish I could find a job in my field that actually paid decent :\ Keep getting screwed over at my company for opportunities (most not the companies direct fault) and nothing in my area pays as well as what I'm doing

Security. I used to be a manager, but the contract I was at was underbid by another company (I mean SERIOUSLY underbid, I was making $17 and change, the new company wanted to pay me $11.50 for exactly the same job)

You know what they say about the grass being greener until you have to mow it. Sometimes people just don't mesh. Sorry to hear it. Hopefully you haven't burned any bridges. I don't imagine you being in peril for long

I joined a startup. I agreed to work extra hours and make their iOS app for them (which would be really cool) and possibly get a big bonus. But then they postponed the iOS app and wanted me to do other random stuff instead. I didn't work enough extra hours and they got passive aggressive and let me go.

It's just amazing how you can go from making $120k in salary to $0.

You were hired to do the iOS app. When they changed their mind about the app, they no longer had projects to justify your salary. Such is the danger of startups. They can be very lucrative, but they are high risk.

Have you ever been fired from a job where they actually gave you a non-BS reason? I never have.

How many times have you been fired? You talk like it happens a lot.

I've been fired once from a temp job over a workman's comp. To this day I regret not reporting them to OSHA.
