It is Star Wars, do you really need to know the plot before you go???

I feel like a lot of fans might not have been so upset if they'd known The Phantom Menace was about trade embargos before they went. They either wouldn't have gone and been pissed off at their wasted time, or would have had their heads in the proper place to enjoy it for what it was.

That said, I'm okay with avoiding hype.

No...it was about Palpatine and how he got started on the road to become the emperor. You had bad guys, doing bad things. Jedi came to save the day.

Star Wars

not entirely, but the parts of me that have become jaded by the original trilogy tend to wonder if they are hiding something.

Other than the Ewoks, what bothers you about the original trilogy?

Star Wars

Except noone really gave a **** about Palpatine. He showed up in ROTJ, as the big bad that held Vader's leash.

They missed a golden opportunity to do AoTC as I, ROTS as II, and a movie in between as III that ends with Many Bothans Dying, and a Corellian corvette getting plans transmitted to it as they flee ;)

The Jedi didn't save the day. A comical bunch of "Gungans" and a 12 year old that had no clue what he was doing did. **** Jake Lloyd. TPM was awful.

Man, poor Jake Lloyd. It's not his fault that he turned in that performance. That was the performance that Lucas was looking for.

The story arc of the original trilogy was The Redemption of Vader. The prequel trilogy should have been The Fall of Skywalker, but that's not what we were given.

Obviously there's entire books written as to why the prequel trilogy sucks (if you haven't watched the redlettermedia review dissecting it, you really should. It's as long as a movie, and there's weird serial killer jokes in it, but it's an amazing dissection of why they don't work -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho16PDZGzDM). What it really does is shift the story from being about Luke Skywalker, to making Anakin the protagonist of all 6 films. I honestly think it could've been done in a way that worked, if they had actually focused on Anakin through the prequels, instead of taking time out to have a rastafarian war, and a trade dispute, and all the other crap. The entire primary storyline for the entire prequel trilogy really could've been done in about one film, there is just a ton of useless **** going on.

Episode 1, make us love Anakin, Episode 2, life falls apart for him and he falls to the dark side, Episode 3 begins with him becoming Vader and that film is the annihilation of the Jedi (as well as convincing us that he has none of the humanity that made us love him in the first film left.) But instead we got a Jedi master we never saw or heard of again, a romance no one bought, the coolest looking villain that chased people for the entire movie, had one fight scene, and died in the most irresponsible way possible, etc etc etc. There was never any emotional reason to buy into the prequels, it was all razzle dazzle with no heart.

Edit: Also shuyung summed up my prequel trilogy synopsis while I was typing it, nice!

That review is spot on. The "Describe a character" section is hugely telling.

I liked the idea of Obi Wan as the main character of the prequels as well and his failure at keeping Anakin from getting evil and stuff.

And the idea of Padme being the aggressor in the relationship while Anakin tries to remain composed (in the review of II)

Padme's life and experience pretty clearly left her much better prepared for interpersonal relationships than Anakin's did.

In any case, any suspicion of this next trilogy based off the second trilogy is unfounded. It's been over 10 years now since the previous movie, the experiences of those movies are in hand, and it's a different circumstance altogether for production. If you make up your mind in advance to pick through this movie with a fine tooth comb looking for faults becuase of the previous movie I guaranteee you will be disappointed with it no matter what its actual quality.

This next go at SW already looks 100% better than the prequels, but I'm trying to keep my expectations low.

Can not wait... I get the feeling Luke plays a VERY small part in this.

I'm okay with either case. I'm okay with the original cast passing the torch to the new heroes in this movie and the rest of the New Trilogy being about them.

I realize that it appears there is a big gap between the life that the original trilogy heroes seem to have now than they had in classic EU core thought. And I know that's going to rub a lot of people the wrong way. I'm just not one of them

So after watching that last night, I said to my friends, "Finally they delivered a trailer that offers more than just nostalgia special effects shots to pique my interest."

The biggest attention-getter is the notion that anybody in the galaxy doesn't know that Jedi and the Force existed. That's.. pretty significant in telling us about how different the last 30-40 (?) years have been than what the old novel-based EU shaped our expectations around. And that's far more compelling than showing off a new paint job for TIE fighters or a rectangular radar dish on the Falcon...

I mean, if you run with the notion that the Empire doesn't just fall immediately when you cut off its head, the Rebellion would ostensibly still need to recruit worlds to their cause. I'd imagine the conversation would have to go something like the following at some point...
"Guys, it's okay. The Emperor can't come after you; he's dead, it's just his flunkies running the show and trying not to bungle things too badly now."
"How do you know?"
"Well, this guy over here saw him die."
"Why should we believe him?"
"Well, he's a Jedi, you see."

I mean, that's how *I'd* sell it. That this evidently didn't happen, and subsequently become the biggest news in the galaxy... makes me really curious what happened instead. Did Luke go all reclusive Obi-Wan after burning his dad? Did ghost-Yoda tell him that rebuilding the Jedi order would be a massive mistake that would only prompt a devastating correction again, after doing some hindsight reflection on that whole prophecy and balance thing?

Now I want to know. So good job, trailer. It's about time.

Ohhhh maybe he is the Big Bad! Killing daddy pushed him over the edge to the Dark Side.

No, I don't believe that.

No, though possibly taking on the new Big Bad as a padawan and losing him to the Dark Side made him go all Yoda?

Anyhow, looks badass. Soooo stoked. #pleasebegoodpleasebegoodpleasebegood

It's also my guess that Luke is in some way 'laying low' but will reluctantly get drawn into Jedi stuff again because: Big Evil Threat.

edit: Also just heard about this: Machete Order which is how I am planning to re-watch just prior to the new release.
