Well it looks like 10240 (which was released to the insider builds a couple weeks ago) is the final build. So far, pretty solid.

Ugh - major complaint about lack of foresight on the part of Microsoft.
Windows Update could easily have checked available disk space and notified me that I was coming up short, but didn't.
After hours of wondering what the heck the problem was, with my tablet silently failing over and over again, giving me no clues other than those cryptic entries in my Update History, I found myself reading the Windows 10 Specifications:

  • Processor:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC ... got that
  • RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit ... got that
  • Hard disk space:
16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS ... crap, I've only got 14.1 GB free!

Thankfully, Disk Cleanup found an extra 3 GB by deleting old Windows Update files.
Seriously? This is "Windows 8.1 with Bing" a.k.a. the operating system specifically designed for cheap, low-spec tablets.
Microsoft could have coded that version of Windows to automatically remove those files as soon as the installations were completed and the files were no longer needed. You know, to keep those small hard drives from getting choked in the first place?

So I guess I'm a bit grumpy because while this was something I could have foreseen and acted upon, I feel Microsoft should have put a bit more thought into this rollout. I work in IT, and it took me a few hours to figure this out. How's the average user going to fare?

Windows 8.1 with Bing is really only meant to be low-cost, not low-spec, but they get lumped together.

I'd like to report on my upgrade process from the insider build but unfortunately my PSU got fried somehow and my desktop is out of commission until I replace it :/

Don't have to wait, you can download directly from Microsoft.
It's what I ended up needing to do for my WinBook.
Windows Update just kept failing, even after I cleared enough drive space, but the Media Creation Tool did the trick.

Not sure if it's confirmed yet, but definitely a staggering number.

I have to disagree.

Apple communicates to you that your system clock doesn't match the domain's system clock (preventing login) by shaking the login window. It doesn't even tell you that something went wrong.

I was in the Insider program for several months myself. And I did something I had never done before. Soon as it was released I upgraded. Every previous OS release was so buggy and unstable I waited at least a year before upgrading. But I like 10 and I've upgraded 8 computers thus far without a hitch. I used the Media Creation tool rather than wait and since I work on computers, I made .iso's of all the different versions for upgrading more of my customers

Not only that, but they've made it retroactive for 7 and 8.1 too. http://bgr.com/2015/08/28/windows-10-features-spying-windows-7-8/

So should I trust the anti-virus built into Win 10 or should I keep something else as well?

Something else.

Try starting again Cortana, now that I re-named your folder you useless piece of ****.

Nothing gives me so much joy as crippling "powerful new features". There should be no feature in an OS that the user can't easily and completely uninstall.

Sounds like all you did was break windows search, the best feature added to Windows in the past decade.

You know there is a setting to turn off Cortana, right?

It's like shooting your TV with a shotgun to turn it off instead of the remote.

That doesn't stop Cortana from loading, which it shouldn't seeing as Microsoft evidently can't bring itself to make a feature that doesn't ask for all kinds of personal information and then trying to sneak them in without people noticing. After that BS of having to go in and manually hunt down and remove updates to stop Windows 8 from stealing information yeah, I'm going to cripple every "feature" I can. I'm already on the lookout for some other nifty "feature" I can annihilate.

The folder could just as easily be re-named if I ever wanted that functionality which is basically never going to happen.

Windows search is not something I either need or want. there's file explorer for stuff on the computer, and google for stuff on the internet. I can do literally everything I need to on the computer with no "features" whatsoever - they're basically never good; they're just another route for Microsoft to either snatch your information or try to take control of how you set up your own computer.

I don't know why you guys find this hard to understand. The computer does literally everything I want without it. I know you guys are involved with computers for a living and maybe therefore it serves some purpose for you, but for me, it's worthless **** that just loads up the task manager and consumes RAM and most likely involves grubby Microsoft fingers in my data.

I would equate it to disabling the power steering in your F150 because you 'don't need it'.

Which would make the vehicle harder to drive. Disabling features in Windows 10 doesn't make it any harder to use that Windows 7 was. It's more like turning off the built-in GPS because the voice is annoying and you don't need it anyhow.

What you're doing is claiming that this is making the vehicle "harder to drive" as if you turned off the power steering because technically turning off the GPS might make things harder if I didn't know where I was going. If I was sitting here saying I execute everything through the command prompt window because I still like DOS I could understand that, but I'm not.

There's also this, from Microsoft's "privacy (lol) agreement":

Quote:
Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.

So unless one wants to go with Linux or some other niche operating system, you're stuck with this agreement just to use your computer.

You guys seem to be astounded that I'm not using these wonderful features, but I still don't have the foggiest idea what you use them for since neither of you bothered to provide an example, I can clearly do everything I need or want to do on the computer, and I haven't seen any response at all in regard to the very problematic behavior of Microsoft in terms of both treating the computer as an extension of Microsoft by making the OS something that requires an account with Microsoft (perhaps not quite "requires" since you CAN create a local account, but still...) and their excessive collection of information to boot.

I don't want my electronic devices sitting there annoying me with "helpful" suggestions all the time, and I definitely don't want them having unnecessary information on me - particularly if they're sending it off to someone else. Electronic devices should sit there and speak when spoken to, and nothing else.
