I've been watching on Amazon Prime.

Keeping in mind that I never read the books, yes I am watching. Well, I have seen the first four episodes. It is a fantasy series bent toward their viewers. Teen aged girls. Still, it is interesting enough.

Man, i remember when this came out, the story was that he submitted the manuscript to the publisher in a shoe box. Some great lesson there for aspiring authors, I guess. I don't remember now whether or not I realized it was supposed to be on a post-holocaust earth.

So, they can make it for young girls, or old men who read it in the 70s. I guess I wouldn't blame them for going for the other market.

There are some free trailers on Amazon, including interviews with Terry Brooks, to pique your interest.

There is some sketchy acting, and it doesn't flow particularly well at times, but I'm a sucker for fantasy stories like this, so I'm definitely in.

I did read the books many years ago, but I can't for the life of me remember much in the way of details. Probably for the best.

I may go back and read some of them again after this show has run it's course.

This series is loosely (very) based on Elfstones of Shannara (book 2.)
I remember believing it was a post apocalyptic earth when I read Sword of Shannara, but the proofs weren't so obvious.

I have a lot of big complaints about this series, but it's still fun.

Ah, thanks, that makes sense. Like Midgen, I also don't remember much about the books, except that I did enjoy them and wished they had a different cover artist.

His intermediate books are really interesting.

He's now done a full connection, starting with modern earth, through the cataclysm, and into early Shanarra.

Really interesting to see how he blends the loss of technology into the Druids, and then how they pick up magic to compensate.

"Word and the Void" is the trilogy set in modern Illinois, and then "Genesis of Shanarra" is set mid-cataclysm (During the Great Wars), followed by Legends of Shanarra which is set 500 years after the end of the Great Wars.

I'm on the fence about watching it (as it would require me gambling and purchasing the whole season off of Amazon Prime). I have a friend who enjoys it.

I read quite a few of the Shannara series back in High School. I think I stopped by about book 7 or 8. If you were to ask me what any of the plots in any of the books were about, I honestly would not be able to tell you. I can remember certain scenes, but no major plots. I thought they were middle-of-the-road as I was reading them, and ultimately they were forgettable. I do remember enjoying Elfstones (the book the series is based on, as Taly said) more than the first.

I found his "Magic Kingdom For Sale: Sold!" books far, far more entertaining and memorable (and I continue to meet others who feel the same way). If you asked me what the plot of those were, I more than likely could tell you on any of them. The basic story is about a depressed, rich, Lawyer who sees an ad in the paper (modern day earth) for a Magic Kingdom for sale to the tune of 3 million (I think?) dollars. He decides "What the hell" and buys it. Shows up, completely expecting a crappy building with animatronic props and what not, but actually gets what he asked for. A medallion that transports him to a fantastical medieval kingdom where is now king. The catch? The place is in turmoil and in desperate need of a ray of hope.

I guess the latter series wouldn't be as interesting on screen, and the folks who greenlit the the thing are desperately hoping for Game of Thrones money (they are the kings of wishful thinking).

Still, I am curious. I'll keep thinking about it.

I found Sword lackluster, and thought Wishsong was basically Sword all over again but written by a much better author. At the time, this made Elfstones the oddball. It was a lot more exciting than Sword, and if I were to move the story to a different medium, I'd want to start there.

I would later read the four book series about Brin and Jair's descendants. Somewhere in there, I pieced together that the world was post apocalyptic Earth. Maybe they come right out and say, it might have been critical to the plot of Elf Queen.

I did read First King, but I had lost my interest in the series by then and struggled to finish it.

I liked the later sequels and his prequel series (before/during/immediately after the Great Wars) better than the original trilogy/First King.

But I found a lot of his work suffered from "same basic plot, same general characters, different names".

I did like Landover, but I actually thought it was worse (for a similar genre) than the Blue Adept series by Piers Anthony.

Voyage of the Jerle Shanarra was my favorite in this series (airships!), but I didn't read the next series yet. The concept is awesome, though.

Episode 6 went so far off the rails there's no longer anything about this series that represents Shannara.

I loved Elfstones; one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time. I've read a few of the others, but they were never nearly as memorable.
