Wow, they're not pulling any punches on this one. Looks like Hamill and Conroy want to go out with a bang (as they deserve).

Quote:
Batman: The Killing Joke isn’t kidding around. Warner Bros’. direct-to-video animated film based on the notorious Alan Moore comic has been rated R, the studio’s home entertainment division tells EW exclusively.

The Killing Joke marks the first film in the DC Universe Original Movie franchise to receive an R rating, and the second Batman movie to do so. (The extended home-video version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the first.)

Starring Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne, Mark Hamill as the Joker, and Tara Strong as Batgirl/Barbara Gordon, The Killing Joke is an origin story that finds the Clown Prince of Crime taunting the Dark Knight by capturing and torturing Batgirl. The original comic was published in 1988 and remains polarizing, with some hailing it as a definitive Joker story and others criticizing it as misogynistic.

“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to remain faithful to the original story — regardless of the eventual MPAA rating,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series, in a statement. “The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

There are currently no plans for an edited PG-13 version of the film.

Batman: The Killing Joke will make its world premiere at Comic-Con International in San Diego this summer, with a release on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD to follow later in the year.

When I sold my comic collection a few years ago to help pay for the furnace in my home, this was the only comic I kept out of the bunch. It was a first printing and the value exploded right out of the gate. Then DC gave the collectors a great big fat middle finger and printed 10+ more editions. Even thought it isn't worth as much as it could be, I still couldn't let it go. Love that damn book.

Yes, when you have a story as popular as The Killing Joke, you tell collectors to get **** and you print more copies.

Indeed. That's like shutting down printing of a classic novel because it's just too good.

That looks...... really, really cheap. Like "Let's send this out to the cheapest Budget-rent-a-Korean-Animation studio we can possibly find." Beavis and Butthead had more frames in their animation than what I just watched. I'm sure someone out there will say "stylistic choice." But I bet the real answer is $$$. It's a great "stylistic choice" if they were Flash animators and we were back in 1999. The bar has already been set from the animated series. I expect at *least* that amount of effort.

And from the few lines Batman and Joker had, it really seemed like Hamill and Conroy were half-heartedly phoning it in.

My expectations were high. That trailer has katana-sliced them down several notches.

Seriously. Its like WB/DC couldn't get laid in a whorehouse with a fistful of $100 bills.
