The Glade 4.0

Our youngest budgie (a.k.a. parakeet) had to be euthanized due to cancer. She was doing pretty well but then suddenly went lame, meaning the nerves were impacted by the mass. This species is prone to cancers.

My daughter insisted on going to the vet with me, and then decided she was going to walk out with the bird, and not let the vet take her back... The vet gave us another 10 min or so, and my daughter finally let me take the bird from her. But I had a sobbing child for a while, which is always hard. Being the strong one all of the time sometimes sucks.

Flash forward a few days and we have 2 more budgies*. She's still very sad at the loss of her Cloudy, though, and understands that you can't let an animal suffer if you have the ability to prevent it. She seemed most upset that Cloudy might have been sad when they were putting her to sleep.

* We now have 3. And an ancient cockatiel. And a sun conure. And a green cheek conure... (And the 3 cats.)

I'm so sorry...I know what it's like to lose a pet. Even now I'm fighting with hubby because he wants to put our 10 year old dog down because she has a bladder leakage problem. That is NOT a good reason to put a loving dog down. It's not like she can help it.

I agree. The only time I consider putting the pet down, is when I know they are suffering. I've put up with a lot of issues with all the pets I've owned. While it can be taxing, it is something I consider my obligation. One that I took when I accepted responsibility of that pet.

As for Serienya, I feel for ya. Hopefully you can find a way for this to be a teaching moment with your child about the cycle of life, if she is old enough to understand? It's not a pleasant lesson, but one that should be taught IMO. Tell her she is not alone with losing a pet. Let her know that many of us have done so, and we mourn with her for her loss.

Thanks. She just turned 12 this week, so she was definitely old enough for that. She has lost pets (rats and 2 of the cockatiels) in the past, but this was the first where we had to put one down versus we came home and the pet had died.

She has since told me that she won't go with me to the vet anymore to have a pet euthanized. One was enough.
