When I beat the game as a sword/board fighter I didn't use a single NPC army. By the end my tank main character was so hard to kill it could waddle in and melee the end boss without much risk at all. I went tank (main) 2hd fighter (alistair) archer (leliana) healer (wynne) and it was pretty stupidly easy. Gonna try it on a harder difficulty next time, I spose.

I used the mage army but really I didn't need to, it was pretty easy, early on I had Alister tanking it, but when it went out of range well my character is a mage and I have all the long duration area of effect spell so basically he was constantly in a blizzard, firestorm, earth quake, thunderstorm, or all of the above.

I never used Wynne except in the mage tower. It was challenging without her heals. I later got the Spirit Healer spec for Morrigan and the game got tons easier.

I just couldn't stomach having a mother goose in my group. I much more prefer the tension Morrigan brought. Good times.

Wynne has some of the best lines in the game, especially in the random conversations your party members have while you're travelling around with them.

Spoiler:
Wynne: Alistair, may I have a word?
Alistair: Of course, anything for my favouritest mage ever.
Wynne: It seems you and our fearless leader are inseparable these days. Joined at the hip, almost.
Alistair: That's a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?
Wynne: Well then, now that you're in an intimate relationship, you should learn about where babies really come from.
Alistair: Pardon?
Wynne: I know the Chantry says you dream about your babies and the good Fade spirits take them out of the Fade and leave them in your arms...but that's not true. Actually what happens is that when a girl and a boy really love each other --
Alistair: Andraste's flaming sword! I know where babies come from!
Wynne: Do you? Do you really?
Alistair: I certainly hope so.
Wynne: Oh, all right then. Aww, look, you're all red and mottled. How cute.
Alistair: You did that on purpose!
Wynne: Now, now Alistair, why would I do such a thing?
Alistair: Because you're wicked. That frail old lady act? I'm so not fooled. I'm on to you now.

Spoiler:
Wynne: Why do you occasionally refer to Alistair as a "little pike-twirler?"
Oghren: Why? Has the little pike-twirler taken offence?
Wynne: It's just a curious description.
Oghren: Curious? (Snorts) Bah. it's entirely true. What, you haven't seen him twirling his pike? Goes at it when he thinks no one's watching. Knocks about in the trees like there's no tomorrow. Caught him just the other day. Blushed all the way down to his navel, then couldn't find his shirt. I swear he's going to hurt himself one of these days, the way he works that thing.
Wynne: I don't want to hear this anymore, do I?
Oghren: I keep telling him, pikes are for sticking things at long range, aye? Horses and such. Not for twirling like a sissy-girl.
Wynne: Wait, you're talking about an actual pike? Like a spear?
Oghren: Obviously. What else would I be talking about?
Wynne: I can't imagine.

Morrigan has some pretty fine comments now and then, mostly when you're interacting with NPC's and she interjects, granted most of it is her ***** like "oh great, and next we're going to rescure a kitten from a tree I suppose", but funny none the less.

The 2nd time thru I switched my party completely to hear different dialog, first time I had used Alister, Leliana and Wynne, so this time thru i'm using Shale, Zevran and Morrigan, and I will say this, I wasn't expecting it, but damn Shale is ammusing, between his constant pestering of Morrigan and his hiis interjections into conversations with NPC's i've laughed out loud for real more than a few times. One time when the wife of the arl of redcliff had run out of the caste one of the things you say she says you would do that? Shale interjects with something along the lines of "yes, and we also crush the heads of women that waste our time" oh, and his commects about pigeons are also funny.

My party generally consists of Alistair, Leiliana, and Shale. Alistair gets shopped out for Wynne occasionally, because Wynne truly lives up to her name of awesome. Leiliana stays because she's my love interest. And Shale is simply <3.

I really like Morrigan too, but there are only s'many character slots, and I'm already an offensive mage, so...

Heh. Morrigan is, indeed, an offensive mage. As in, everything I do offends her, and she's not shy about giving me grief for it. I dropped her for Wynne like a bad habit.

She's a Veronica Mars-ish marshmallow, prickly at first. But she softens up immensely if you treat her with kindness.

Playing a male human mage, it seems as though Morrigan actively wants to like me. I'm not sure if this is specific to playing a mage, or if any human man would work.

Oh, forgot two really funny ones with Shale and Zevran that i've gotten to hear this time thru with them in the party.

Spoiler:
Shale: "Order me to do something."
Warden: "Give Zevran a hug."
Zevran: "Now, now. I don't care much for foreign objects invading my personal space. Well... usually."

Shale: So here is a question for the painted elf...
Zevran: Painted elf? Oh, that's me! I do like that.
Shale: Am I to understand correctly that the painted elf is a "crow"?
Zevran: Not literally, but... yes. I am a Crow.
Shale: As in a bird.
Zevran: Is there another sort?
Shale: So the painted elf assaults helpless statuary with its feces?
Zevran: If given sufficient cause, why not?
Shale: That is outrageous! The painted elf will stay away from me. Or else.
Zevran: (Sighs) I get a lot of that.

I like the direction they have taken with the expansion. They totally avoided the issue of a canon ending, which pleases me greatly, meaning by the time the sequel comes out, they can still do what is best by putting it several centuries later(during the next Blight) where the ending of the first will have little impact as everyone will be dead by that point, keeping things as vague as possible. That way, you can have the ending you want.

EDIT:

Also, I hate Morrigan. I decide to help someone out, she complains that I help everyone out. Reload and choose not to help them out, she complains that I might miss out on the opportunity for that person to owe me a favor. **** you, you skanky whore.

Morrigan is hands down the most appealing female character in any game, ever. She is fantastic.

Morrigan and I used to get along great when we had a little thing going. Then I started a second little thing with Leliana. So I did the manly thing and started to actively avoid Morrigan completely.

To my surprise, it worked! Then one day I accidently rightclicked on her when trying to click on something else, and she let me have it good. :( -30 loyalty and I don't think I've been able to get it to come up since. I would drop her from my group but she is ridiculously powerful. I was ambushed by 17 guys in a tight area once... Morrigan proved her worth despite being an acidic ***** there many times over. Sleep -> Waking Nightmare -> Blizzard is crazy.

You could work on that you know, being civil to people isn't all that hard.

I am relatively certain I can sleep with both of the female characters if I sleep with Liliana first. Not sure, though. I would have to make sure to provide them both with the right gifts, etc.

I actually couldn't get Morrigan to do anything after the conversation to break it off.

She objects anyway!

As for the "back off" conversation, it costs you about 20 rep points. She will still sleep with you if you max our her faction again.

For those of you who have played a female character -

How does the plot to save your life by drawing the Old God spirit into the unborn child go?

You have to convince Alistair to sleep with Morrigan. I think it also might be possible to have Loghain sleep with her as well if you spare his life.

So I now have 1 week to finish this game. I'm getting ready to head into the Alienage to get yet more ammunition against Loghain. Somebody please tell me its going to end soon.

I'm getting really tired of this whole "I know I told you this was what you need to do, but now you need to do this before we can do what I originally told you" bullcrap.

I now, officially, hate dwarves too.
