Very nice.

I must say though, after experimenting with a liquid cooler, having it conk out and going through the *** pain of replacing it with an Evo 212 I will never go with liquid cooling again. It was sort of cool to be able to say I did I but I now see Coro's point regarding putting liquid inside a computer.

The new one I got is a Hyper 212 Evo, which seems to be a titan among air coolers.

In terms of physical size, it certainly is. I was worried when it arrived that it wouldn't fit in the case - and I have a huge tower case. It did, but barely - the fan was bumping into the RAM chips at first. Then I realized that you could simply turn it the other direction, and it worked.

I'm also using a 212 evo, for a few years now. It is gigantic, but seems to work great, I've never had an issue. (Running an i5-2500k overclocked to 4.4ghz).

It's also rather quiet, which is a big plus.

Sui, I can't speak to the specific components (brand and model-wise), but those look like nice specs for an Oculus platform.

I'm having few complaints with my 2700k / GTX 980 rig, despite the software warning me that I'm below spec. (it's the long-in-the-tooth processor at fault, there, and likely the culprit in the occasional framerate dip into the mid-80's)

Probably going to be waiting quite a while on that one, the 1080 is the flagship and AMD doesn't seem to be in any rush to compete in that space. Looks like things are really heating up at the low end price point with the 1060 announcement though (better than 980 performance for 299$).

Yeah, I mean to the rrp rather than rapacious limited stock pricing. Sounds like the MSI gaming is the quietest one so I'm waiting for that. Hard to get good comparatives info on fan noise though

At this point, it seems pretty safe to recommend the 1060 for roughly equivalent performance, additional VR-specific rendering features, and a lower price tag.

Welp, all built as specced, though in the end I skipped on the sound card and added a Thunderbolt 2 expansion card instead (lets me use my existing Mac monitor) - which raises an intriguing question about whether the sound on the motherboard or on the GPU (weird, I know, rite?) is better. For another day.

The case is interesting - it pivots the motherboard through 90 degrees, the idea being that as heat rises it rises through your empty space instead of through your other expansion cards. This brings some useful things - ports are on the top of the case! - and some annoyances, including a much larger physical case size than expected (couple inches at the bottom to allow air to be sucked into the bottom of the case ,couple at the top to allow cables to run out the back)

Overall, I'm moderately pleased. The case is very cramped internally and a pain to cable run neatly for, but as Im all SSD, the removal of the 3.5 inch drive pays, optical drive mount, and use of the 2.5 inch slots to run cables through has made life easy for me. If you actually wanted those parts life would be considerably trickier.

The case itself is lovely with solid aluminium side and front panels - but then is inexplicably and unfortunately spoilt by painted plsatic on some of the highest interaction areas; the fold up panel on top exposing the USB ports, fan speed switches and headphone/microphone port, the power & reset buttons, and the grille that hides all the cable table you'd otherwise see.

On reflection, it might look a lot better in black rather than the silver, where it obviously slightly chintzy paint on plastic.

Functionally, this design isnt ideal either - the fold down door for the USB area is directly over the i/o shield for the motherboard, and sockets at the top of the i/o area (front, on this case, top on a normal ATX one) can foul the door when tall cables - HDMI, USB, etc - are plugged directly into the motherboard. Even when this doesnt occur, inserting cables into the slots beneath the flap is hard, as visibility is obscured

Interesting but flawed case design.

I'll let you know about the actual Oculus as I get some experience... first thoughts are that its super impressive as a tech demo, but Im not yet convinced about the few minutes of gaming I've tried ;p

Hah, I missed the Silverstone case in my scan-through earlier.

I love my Raven RV02 (image fished from the Internet, not mine), but I think it's rather larger than yours, so I wouldn't call it cramped. It's the line they pioneered the rotated motherboard design with, though.

The Oculus is still waiting for killer content to make it a truly compelling purchase outside the VR enthusiast crowd. It's got a few experiences that are rather impressive, but several (prime among them I'd rate The Climb) are waiting for the Touch controllers to come out to be truly excellent games. They're either limping along with inferior control schemes (like The Climb) or simply waiting to release with hand presence controls later this year.

Playing the solus project right now. Is ok at VR, but obviously a VR retroport
