Alongside today's announcement that Microsoft will launch an Xbox One system that doesn't include Kinect, the company finally revealed that the Games With Gold promotion is coming to Xbox One--but with some changes to the way Gold members get their free games.

Beginning in June, Games With Gold will begin bringing "subscription-based access to free games" to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Next month, Gold members will be able to download and play Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood for free.

What stands out about this is the "subscription-based access" qualification: It sounds as if you'll only be able to play these games while your Xbox Live subscription is active, as is the case with PlayStation Plus' Instant Game Collection offerings. We don't yet have all the details, like whether you'll be able to play the free games indefinitely as long as you have a Live subscription or how long the games will be offered for.

Whatever the case, this already stands in contrast to the Xbox 360's version of Games With Gold. Since it launched last year, it's offered up two free games for Xbox Live Gold members every month. These games could be downloaded and kept forever--even if your subscription lapsed, you'd still be able to play and re-download the free games you had downloaded previously. This gave it a leg up in one way on PlayStation Plus, which only allows its freebie games to be played while subscribed to Plus. But it also had the effect of the offered games almost always being older ones, resulting in a great deal of criticism.

Microsoft initially announced plans to bring Games With Gold to the Xbox One last year, but offered no timeline for making it happen. In February, Xbox boss Phil Spencer indicated we'd be getting word "fairly soon."

Also coming to the Xbox One in June are the regular sales, branded Deals With Gold, that have been seen on the Xbox 360 for some time now. The first Xbox One games to be discounted through this will be Forza Motorsport 5 and Ryse: Son of Rome, as well as "a few other surprises."

Xbox Live Gold members will also soon have access to a "virtual VIP room" on the Xbox One that offers a look at the "free games, monthly deals, and other great benefits" they're entitled to.

Xbox One without a Kinect coming in June for $399.

IMO Microsoft should have kept Kinect and lowered the price, now they have nothing unique going for the system. It's the same price as a higher-powered competitor and I guarantee MS will be putting exclusives on PC whereas Sony will not.

Kinect is a godsend for media, 0 value for games so far.

I hope so, I let my subscription lapse when they released the Xbone, would be nice to be able to use the 360 as a netflix/hulu/hbo go stream box.

So, I finally got an Xbox One. Mine came with the new Battlefield 1, so I'll be checking that out. Also, I bought Destiny (which has been chewing all my time! Really digging this game) and Mortal Kombat X (for old times sake).

Open question: what are some games that you have enjoyed playing over the last couple years on Xbone? Open to suggestions from any genre, but would appreciate input on local co-op games, racing games, FPS. Don't feel like you need a fancy write-up; maybe just say what you have liked specifically playing on Xbox vs PC.

Rock Band 4 is my local co-op of choice. For FPS, I haven't picked up Destiny lately, but put in a fair number of hours with it; I also enjoy picking up Overwatch or, now, Titanfall 2 for a bit of matchmade multiplayer outlet. Sunset Overdrive is an exclusive that I rather enjoyed the over-the-top tone of, though I haven't gotten around to finishing it because I'm terribad at it. :D

I just picked up the remastered Skyrim for Xbone, it is pretty but it is still just Skyrim. I freaking love Destiny. Fallout 4 was a ton of fun. The new Tomb Raider games are fun too.

Also, Batman Arkham Knight. Get that ****.

Ooh, yeah. Forgot about the new Tomb Raiders since I've been playing them on PC. I haven't yet finished the second because I've been busy-busy-busy, but the first is one of the few games where I've finished a narrative single-player campaign in several years.

Thanks. Good suggestions guys. I might even pick up a few that I have already played some on PC, just because (new TV)+(new console)=fun! Plus, I should be able to find some of these on the used rack at Game Stop.

I'll advocate for Tomb Raider as well. I still get pretty good mileage outta the Halo games (Master Chief Collection and 5).

Don't forget about the backward compatibility too. If you get XBox Live, you'll have 4 free games a month; 2 on 360 (always backward comp) and 2 on Bone.

Anyone else get Skyrim for the Bone? I am crashing like a mother **** at times. Yet! I can sit and watch the boy child (who I should not call a boy any longer) play for hours with no issues.

Maybe it's a modding issue. When/where does it crash?

Yes, I picked up the new remaster but..

I have applied no mods. It is just the game that came on the disk. I seem to crash the most around doors or switches. Like in one dungeon, you hit a switch to open the door and it starts spewing flames from several places. I crashed after hitting that switch five times. The next three were right at the door to the next room.

Today, I played with no issues...I hope this is just something that needs to be patched.

Hmmm odd. I know you applied no mods, but just want to make sure you checked that your boy did not. I'm not 100% sure how it works on XBox, but mods are not profile-specific on PC. If he applied mods by himself, I could see it impacting you.

It's real easy to check. There's a mods or add-ons selection on the main menu.
