Mr. Farsky?

That is a lucid, intelligent, well thought out objection. Overruled.

Seriously, it's his job. However, I personally have absolutely no patience for people that sit around waiting for someone to say something that they can pounce on and get outraged over. That fact that it is his job to anticipate, avoid, and deal with such people does not alleviate responsibility from people who are equivalent to internet trolls.

Yes, he does not seem to be good at his job. His job sucks. It sucks because these people are douchebags.

The only "buffoonery" is the desperation to find a problem in literally everything. Spicer has some clumsy phraseology, but he's speaking in real time, not reading a teleprompter. He specifically used the word "holocaust". It is the height of nitpickery to claim this is anything other than lefties trying to look smart.

"Oh hey let's nitpick the exact use of the term holocaust and whether gas used in chamber is "using chemical weapons'" Truly a winning case on the pivotal facts of the matter at hand.

Lol. Well, I just got banned from yet another of my go-to lefty blogs for making this exact point. *sigh* For all its flaws, I do love Hellfire. At least here, we all take it in stride when someone points out our respective moral, intellectual, and familial deficiencies. :D

He doesn't seem to be good at his job, but then again, the press doesn't seem to be the least bit interested in doing theirs properly either. Reporters want to do things like sit there and shake their heads when he's halfway through answering a question. You can't constantly be going out of your way to trip someone up, then complain they're not doing a good job.

Really, the only things we can conclude about Spicer are that his performance can't really be evaluated very well with the available information.

Don't violate someone's safe space, bro. That's not woke. (I think; I have no idea how to use the lingo)

*chuckle* Exactly. I violated their safe space, failed to check my privilege, repeatedly mansplained sexism and whitesplained racism to women and minorities, failed to consider the intersectional implications of misogynoir, denied their lived experience by filtering it through my validity prism, and silenced the voices of marginalized people by continuing to speak over them instead of shutting up and listening. Sadly, none of that is a joke. I've regularly been accused of all of that, using those actual terms. Of course, what finally did it at The Mary Sue was that my defense of Spicer in this case apparently constituted outright Holocaust denial.

Want us to go over there and show them what those terms actually mean?

This is exactly what a lot of people hear any time someone on TV or in the paper or on the internet starts in talking about any of those terms you just listed. Granted, it's often couched in rather less overtly absurd language (I can only imagine you've put your foot into a seething mass of pampered college sophomores) but people hear terminology like what you just related, then they hear Van Jones on CNN using softer versions of the same language and just think "basically these people don't want to have to listen to anyone else."

I don't get how you can even stand to talk amongst people who actually use that kind of language unironicly.

Hahaha. The thought had occurred. In all seriousness, though, the site is actually a pretty good one for general geek-related content with a millennial feminist slant if one can ignore the more ridiculous claims and, above all, the comment section. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at avoiding comment sections or ignoring things I disagree with. :)

It's tough sometimes - ok, all the time - but I actually do learn from it. There's a kernel of truth to most of the concerns they raise, and you end up with a bit of a "once seen, it can't be unseen" aspect to feminist critiques of media. It genuinely is shocking how ubiquitous a lot of sexist tropes are. And on the flipside, I've also learned the limits of my own sympathy for the lefty viewpoint, which is also a good thing.

This sounds like saying "they have a hell of a septic tank"

I've run across this before, and in most cases while they might be right that the trope exists, it simply isn't sexist. Some of the tropes aren't terribly complimentary to women, but they aren't fabrications - they're often accurate about whatever subpopulation of women they talk about - and there's an equally large prevalence of anti-male tropes as well, which aren't sexist either. They're generally true about specific subpopulations of men.

Considering your political leanings, I would think (unlike DE) you'd have an easier time there than here. Your response is surprising to me, I guess.

Just like y'all don't like being lumped in with "White Supremacists" and their ilk, we don't like being lumped in with the lunatic fringe on our side.

Its a spectrum ;) You have your fringe, we have ours. Both are kinda shameful.

I read other political sources of course, but I only discuss politics here. Not sure if that's what you're saying.

Well, speaking as someone who grew up in a house where we had to dig up the septic tank and snake out the pipe every couple of years, I'd say a quality septic system is something devoutly to be desired!

I don't agree. His job is to communicate for the administration, and not *be* the news. His job is to deal with these jackasses. I don't think that excuses the jackasses, but again - that's his job. If he's not handling them well, he's not doing a good job. Again - worst job ever.

Honestly, this is the only forum where I can express an opinion without being called a flaming liberal or a neocon nazi. I think my posts tend to be focused on "no, actually that's not right, the reality is..." so I violate the echo chamber as a matter of practice.

Nah, I'm basically a libertarian / liberal hybrid on policy with incrementalist, establishmentarian instincts, and a rationalist approach to debate. The Glade is infinitely more congenial to that mix than any identity-focused Lefty forum, even if my policy preferences ultimately hew closer to theirs than the Glade's.

True, but I was thinking more of things like the boob-butt pose, boob-plate armor, half-naked women in video games, etc. I just can't look at boob-plate armor anymore without finding it ridiculous.

It is, but it's not really sexist - it was a way to portary women in fully-covering armor that accommodates their form. The people drawing it aren't engineers - and in any case, it's fantasy. Lots of other types of armor are ridiculous too, so are a lot of the swords... etc.

Complaining about this stuff isn't about sexism, it's about being in control. "You have to run your fantasy past my sensibilities for approval."

Also, the sort of people that worry about boob plate really can't be counted on to have sensible opinions on either cruise missile strikes or subsequent discussions of them.

What do you think you're doing every time you make comments about "Screwing anyone who isn't a white male" and things of that nature?

No pejorative towards septic tanks was intended with that comparison.

Everyone thinks they're a rationalist. Not that you're not rational (you are, actually, very rational from your side of the aisle) but for the most part when people start talking about "rationalism" or talking about how they approach things "rationally" what they're trying to do is say "therefore anyone that disagrees with me is irrational" so they can just go straight to snarky disdain and loaded language and have zero-effort debate, or else get to just vent their spleen because no one bothers.

I know you're not one to do this, but it does happen.
