Maybe Tom Sawyer and N-word Jim can lead a bold new adventure? Me I would like to see them try and clean up Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles.

I am angry about this. Going back and editing works that are considered classics is beyond ridiculous.

This is akin to banning and burning books.

Well it is plainly their fault for using the vocabulary at the time. If they where at all enlightened beings, then they would have seen in the furture the hateful racist nature of their language and avoided it.

In 100 years, when no one gives a **** about the word nigger anymore, are the books going to be reverted back?

Idiotic.

After reading the following, I had to double check and make sure this wasn't on Onion...

Quote:
"It's outrageous," said Niger Innis, spokesman for the Congress of Racial Equality, a New York-based civil rights organization. "Are they going to go to Mark Twain as well and take out all of those references?

"It's censorship, and to blacken over a word does not mean that you can blacken over the history."

The Congress for Racial Equality is extremely right-wing.

Ad hominem fallacy.

Not necessarily. His post doesn't indicate that he thinks that that makes the statements wrong. I actually took Xeq's post the other way, "Even this extremely right-wing group is offended by the blatant racism against black people this publisher is displaying."

You may be right, he just didn't specify.

It wasn't the name of the organization that I found odd.

I honestly thought that the post was expressing surprise that a civil rights group would be opposed to removing the word nigger from a book. I just pointed out that CORE is very right-wing which means this position isn't out of character for them.

I think it had more to do with "BLACK out part of history" or whatever.

Revising history with warm and fuzzy language should be out of character for every person and group in a free country.

In jr high, I remember reading My Brother Sam is Dead with all the curse words scratched out. I can see something like that but you shouldn't go around editing "original works" If you want to do a "modern english version" of a novel and brand it as such I can see that.

And I would have just picked a different adjective than just putting "N-word" on the cover.

Yup, I died a little inside when I read that.

I think they were trying to retain a little bit of honesty, so they intentionally didn't put some safe pseudo-equivalent. Doing so is like trying to cover it up. It's... less bad this way.

Overall, however, it's terribly silly. I'd be more fired up, but I don't see this catching on.
