So , I guess... **** Nazis. But I have some sympathy for DEs positions, provided the state continues to protect alternate views, and ensures the Nazis dont actually get to errect burning crosses on African American lawns, prevent left wing views being espoused, or burn down synagogues. The minute that **** starts happening doors should be being broken down.
Like I said, it is the job of the government to **** Nazis when they break the law, if domestic, or invade France* if foreign.
Erecting a burning cross on someone's lawn is a crime, no matter who does it. So is engaging in violence against views you disagree with, and burning down synagogues - or for that matter, burning down almost anything.
When it is the Nazis doing this sort of thing, the government should **** them. When it is someone else doing it, the government should **** them too. So yes, the government should continue to protect everyone's right to express their terrible opinions. As a practical matter, however, neither the left nor minority groups are at any real risk anywhere in the west of not being protected any time in the foreseeable future; the events of the last years indicate that the left and minorities have received an undue amount of deference from the government, not too little. This is what encourages leftists to show up with clubs at Nazi rallies - they have been allowed to think that **** is their business rather than that of the government.
In the abstract, yes, we want to make sure that Nazis do not start gaining a political foothold that might allow them to engage in what they want to engage in, but again - the reality is that this is very unlikely to happen. There is an awful lot of daylight between "I think the Nazis ought to be alloed to protest" and "I would vote for a Nazi" - a huge amount of daylight. This is not Weimar Germany. Now, in the unlikely even that Nazis edo find themselves occupying the seats of power - by which I mean actual Nazis, not the boogeyman-under-the-bed Nazis that some people like to imagine they are already there because it's easier than using ones' brain - then we're into "In case of Axis, break glass" territory, but the reality is that we are not there and are not likely to get there.
