Thanks! Down another belt notch, and as of today I've lost 20 lbs. When I've lost another 15 more lbs, it's gym membership time (I'm holding off until I hit that first target weight in order to ease the stress on my knees with running, biking, etc).

After that, I'm wanting to drop another 40-50. It's insane how that actually seems feasible now.

Definitely get started on the elliptical before the treadmill. There's no reason to put your knees under that stress really.

Id even start with brisk walking for 20-30 min. If you stick with the program and just add a small amount of exercise to the mix, you will see huge benefit.

Grab Phe and go for a nice brisk walk. Get some fresh air. Save the gym membership for later :p

Absolutely doable, no doubt in my mind. Keep it going, slow and steady. No need to starve yourself, just eat good food. If and when you hit a plateau just know that happens to everyone and reboot.

I definitely like the idea of going for a walk, especially with the warm weather now almost here. Well by me anyway. Mark Sisson (Primal Blueprint dude) advocates a lot of walking as part of the whole paleo lifestyle thing. I mean I dont buy into all the primal/paleo stuff, but there are some things that just make sense and resonate with me. Eating whole foods and getting more exercise like walking, hard to argue with.

I have a desk job and I like to take walking breaks at work. Do a lap or two around the building, outside when it's nice out.

The idea behind the walking is just to stir up the metabolism, and consume some of the stored glycogen. Simulate the cycle (so to speak).

I'd love to walk (Phe and I had planned to start doing so when the weather warmed up), but having walked to a lovely little bistro for lunch a couple of times (1/2 mile each way) and to the coffee shop (1 block each way) near my office, it's not doable. My outdoor allergies just suck too much, and the pollen hasn't even kicked into high gear. I enjoy walking there and back, but I pay for it the rest of the day/night. :(

I feel like I'm stalling on pound droppage a bit (though I did just go down another belt notch), so I'm going to start the gym thing a bit early.

I hit a plateau as well. The stuff I was doing for the first 40lbs is only good enough to maintain my weight now.

I need to get some exercise as well.

Fortunately, the weather is nice enough outside to take some extended walk breaks at work. I plan to take one this afternoon.

The good news is, my blood sugar numbers have been really good. This is encouraging.

That's great! I seem to have gotten around 25 lbs out of the deal.

I have, like, every health problem in the book running in my family (diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, kidney disease, gout, high cholesterol, degenerative disc disease, strokes, yadda yadda yadda), most of them in my mom. Thankfully, despite my weight, I've been inexplicably healthy. Blood sugar and blood pressure literally perfect, and no signs of anything else aside from elevated cholesterol. That was six months ago, and the doctor said it wasn't high enough to be worrisome, but to cut down on fatty foods. With the change in my diet, I imagine even that is doing well now (I'll find out when I have my next checkup).

But I say all of that to say that I want to get a handle on this and get healthy now while I can, before any of those problems develop. I don't know what finally clicked in my head; knowing you have a fault and accepting that knowledge are two totally different things, but somehow that acceptance and motivation finally kicked in. Since I started the diet (and I was nervous about that too), the results I've seen have given me confidence and self-assurance, not just for this (health and weight), but other areas where I've been experimenting with self-improvement.

I'm nervous about going to the gym. Always have been, even when I was young and skinny. Self-consciousness, mostly. But now I'm young enough to still see results, yet old enough to realize that I don't care if anyone judges me. Still uncomfortable, but I can push through it, I think (hope!). :)

You'll get over it quick when you finally go to the gym and realize that nobody gives a **** about you. Most people are in their own zone with headphones on.

I used to lift weights at multiple gyms on an extremely regular basis back in my early 20s. It was definitely to try and gain some muscle mass on my 120 lb frame. Self consciousness and the fact that I was a skinny bleeding geek in the heart of jock shark waters was what was difficult to overcome.

I quickly realized that the gym != high school. Most of the guys there either didn't care about me, or (more commonly) kind of saw me as an equal. Politeness, joking, etc. were commonplace there. I truly got over my fears when a guy who was benching 325lbs asked skinny, little me to spot him. And he was completely sober and serious. So I did (after stating my reservations). And he was nice about it.

I think it's partially due to the fact that you're *at the gym.* I read something about jocks having moreso a "team mentality" than most, that they are more likely to work together as a cohesive team (including at the workplace) and even go so far as to make personal sacrifices for what they perceive to be as their team. By you being there and doing the same things they're doing, you're on their team. There is a camaraderie at the gym that I've seen time and time again (at more than half a dozen gyms) that I was always surprised to see.


But if you're one of those guys that grunts really, really loudly all the time... the kind that are WAY louder than any person should be grunting, then yes. Judgments by others may be involved.

It's not really that...all of the quote-unquote "jocks" I've ever known (from high school and whatnot) have been uniformly nice guys; even moreso when in a gym environment. It's more a personal thing, like I don't feel worthy enough to be there. It's totally a "me" thing; a stupid, stupid "me" thing. :)

At any rate, it's irrelevant. I went yesterday, proved to myself that it's NBD, and so now I'm fine. Looking forward to going again this afternoon.

Also, almost down another belt notch (as in I can cinch the belt that tightly, but it's not quite comfortable to wear there). After that, I've got one more notch before I'm out of notchs and need to buy myself a new belt. Woo-hoo!

That's an even better indicator than weight, notches on the belt.

Thats great that you added the gym too.

I'm still doing well myself. Really looking to push to the next level soon. I start back up with crossfit this month after doing my strength training since November.

Update for me, I am officially in "cutting" mode for the pending warm weather... assuming that ever comes.

December 1 2012: 202 lbs
Feb 26 : 189 lbs
March 14: 190

Full diet break / refeed for ~ 2 weeks : not eating crazy amounts of calories but had oatmeal, bread and pasta if I wanted. Ate enough but not excessive.

March 30: 192 lbs Began strict primal/paleo again and intermittent fasting

April 4th: 187 lbs

Onward!

I had a nice milestone this morning as well.

11/29/2012: 300lbs
4/4/2013: 250lbs

At 6' 5", and being in terrible physical shape, removing 50lbs from my frame has me feeling a *lot* better. I still have some belly fat I need to get rid of. I think I'm going to shoot for 220lbs as a long term goal weight.

I'm at the point where the rate of weight loss from just dieting has slowed to a trickle. I've lost a lot of muscle and fat in this process. I'm going to have to find a way to incorporate some exercise in order to restore some muscle to my frame. Unfortunately, I've had two back surgeries, and am still not physically able to do any kind of impact exercise, lifting, etc...

As it is now, very short walks are where it's at.

Swimming would be a great choice, but the options for that are nearly zero, for the lack of facilities in this area.

I've taken to using Sous Vide for cooking meat.

It's crazy how much better ever moderate grades of meat taste when cooked this way.

It takes a little getting used to and learning how long and at what temperature to cook to get the desired results, but once you get the process down the results are amazing.

I've managed to lose about 45 lbs since august of last year, (from 235 max, I'm down to right around 190, plateaued for now.)

Considering that's with zero exercise, I'm pretty happy with it. I've gone pretty much full keto --minimal carbs. Can't help feeling like I am eating 'wrong' when my meals are mostly meat, cheese and veggies, but its hard to argue with results.
