This is me talking and it is at the minimum, better than the first.

The beginning could be the ending of any other movie. The throwbacks are there but it isn't as laden as Ghostbusters was nor are they as heavy handed but it takes on the direct effects that still linger from the first movie. The action is tighter, harder, and better (if more implausible). All of the cast is excellent even if they aren't all given enough time to shine.

It is the return of the non-marvel summer blockbuster the way they used to be. Grab some popcorn and an overpriced soda (just big enough you don't have to leave and miss the new 'volleyball' scene like the dude in my row did) and enjoy the thrill of Air Conditioning and jet planes in summer - and don't worry my favorite plane is in it - which tells you exactly where the mission is taking place if you catch it.

Can confirm it was a solid movie. I would have liked to see more dogfighting in it, but I can understand why it would make less sense to be real if they did.
Spoiler:
Probably not realistic for untested pilots in F-18's to hold their own against a 5th gen fighter? It still felt kinda silly that Maverick defeated 2 and lasted as long as he did for a 3rd before he required saving.

Overall, it gave me what I wanted and kindly left political messaging out of it. The use of Val Kilmer was nice.
