My wife just sent me a message that she was thinking about buying a "Happenings" Book. Which is basically just a coupon book for local businesses that businesses and schools sell to raise money. The thing that made me do a double take was that she was thinking about buying it from her niece. Her niece is in Kindergarten.

How much greed do you have to have to make Kindergartners participate in something like this?! Her niece brought home the Happenings books and when her mother asked what they were for, she told her they gave them to her to keep. She isn't even old enough to understand the concept!

I know the school is just trying to raise money, and I support that. But come on! Do you really ****ing need to expose FIVE YEAR-OLDS to capitalism that quickly?! And they and I both know that they're really just assignments for the parents.

Jesus Q. Christ. That's greedy.

I live right in the middle of 3 schools, from elementary to high school, lots of kids in the area flogging stuff for this, that, and the other... not a big fan, especially the younger kids. Girl scout cookies are one thing, but damn...

And what does the Q. stand for?

They have sold these for years now around where my folks live. They are cards that have insane discounts on them (such as a buy a sammich at Sonic and get a free drink or side). They basically sell themselves.

However, the money is used to help fund extracurriculars, not for the school's budget.

Right, they use the funds for class trips and other activities that would otherwise be pushed off to the side. I like the books, a lot better than selling candy...

I'm in that boat right now.

At least this first ofthe year, the nic-nac sell-a-thon program also used the internet. So all that had to be shared is a website, and family & friends use my daughter's code and she gets credit for the sales. It will help fund their trips to the GA Aquarium, The Fernbank, Zoo Atlanta and at least on trip to see a stage production in downtown Atlanta.

There are still sales coming up for Girl Scounts this fall (I think candies and nuts?) and cookies in December.

Having 6 year olds sell this stuff sucks, but it's really the only way they can afford to do the things they do, without requiring parents to end up paying hundreds of dollars throughout the year.

Umm...that doesn't start with "Q".

Jacob just started kindergarten...and we have discount books to sell.

One benefit of working for the "Large Corporation" is that I just put a stack in the breakroom with an envelope for money...right next to all the other fundraising items, and all us parents just by each other's kids stuff.

This is generally better than the alternative, though with so many using this option, it can be an annoyance to others.

There are few things that I detest more about how we raise kids than all these door to door sales schemes.

I don't have a problem with it.

I really hate the constant demands for fundraisers and fees and everything else from schools. I'm already paying taxes for this crap, but every damn thing that comes down the pike has a charge with it.
