We got sponsorship from them when I was in HS going to a IT school in the afternoon to host LAN parties to raise money for the school. In fact, check out my motorcycle jacket:

okay, I have not posted much of a log for a few days, but I have this sugar thing down pretty well.

I have taken up having a Diet Dr. Pepper or a Diet Pepsi a day. No more than 2 a day max. Still drinking coffee with no sugar. I did weigh myself on Monday. And in 160 days I lost 32 lbs (roughly 1/5 of a pound weight loss a day I think). I am not sure if this is a reasonable weight loss or not since I have modified my diet a bit since the last time I weighed myself.

but someone today commented on how I have visibly lost weight in my face since Christmas day.

But I have scheduled a Dr. Appointment. Their official next appointment date was early February. but when I mentioned my concerns they pushed me to January 28th.

But I do have a question for Micheal and/or anyone else on the board with diabetes.. I know blood sugar levels can spike or drop, but how can you tell? What does it feel like?

Energy level. If you suddenly feel wired or drowsy, check your blood sugar. Do you have a kit yet?

Symptoms of high blood sugar vary depending on lots of things.

Fatigue, increased thirst, blurry vision that varies throughout the day and frequent urination are some. Dry/pasty mouth and/or sores that come for no reason and seem to take too long to heal too.

These things will be compounded when you are sick or have an infection.

The key thing is, if you are having symptoms, the its waaaay too high.

When I was diagnosed my blood sugar was peaking at over 400. My main symptoms were unquenchable thirst, and peeing very frequently. This is very dangerous, but the real danger of high blood glucose levels happen even at slighly elevated levels over a long period of time. Macular degeneration, and thickening of the lenses of the eyes, dental health issues, heart/liver/lung issues, etc... The thicker blood causes havoc on the smallest blood vessels of the body, which happen o be in your internal organs, eyes, and in the extremities...

High blood glucose it bad juju...

Edit: My Dr. also told me that some types of artificial sweeteners can have the same (or similar) detrimental effect on your endocrine system as natural sugar. He mentioned splenda being preferable to aspartame. I don't know how valid that statement is. I have yet to do my own study on that subject. I've tried to cut down on artificial sweeteners for other reasons anyway...

There is a ton of info on the web... do some searches and educate yourself.

Eat smaller portions, and eat more frequently. Avoid large heavy meals, even if you are super hungry. Avoid sugar/sweetened foods and starchy carb sources, find green veggies you like and make sure to have some healthy protein with each meal.

About what Midgen said . . .

All true, all valid. I've dealt with all those on occasion.

In general, for me it is the energy level that gives it away. People are different. Get a kit so you can test yourself.

Oh, and over 400, get thee to an emergency room. Pronto. At 500 you are ripe for a diabetic coma, especially in a heat wave.

I do not yet have a kit. The plan is to get one when my school money comes in on Friday.

Meters are usually really cheap or even free, and will usually come with a few sample strips. Check your local drugstores and talk to the pharmacist.

From your starting point the weight loss is quite reasonable, six pounds a month is a tad high, but not at all unreasonable.

Of course, it may be the diabetes that is causing the weight loss. Your body can't store sugar if the insulin is being resisted. Stored sugar gets converted to fat.

Really, get to a free clinic or something to get that diagnosis. This isn't a gambling event. There are some blind amputees that can tell you a lot about that.

Today would have been my brother's 55th birthday...if he had taken care of himself. He lost a leg and then his life to diabetes! Get a test kit and check your blood sugar twice a day...once first thing in the morning and again an hour before bed! Make it a habit. I check mine at 7AM and 10PM like clockwork.

Leave the candies and other sweets and diet sodas behind you!! They are very bad for you even if you don't have diabetes. Forget the fast food...it takes just as long to grill a burger as it does to go through the drive-thru...and if you use bison instead of beef, it's a lot less cholesterol and fat and is a lot better for you. The bison does cost a lot more, so if you can't afford it get the lowest fat content beef you possibly can. Start eating poultry and fish, especially salmon, instead of beef or pork. Limit your meat portions to the size of a deck of cards, your vegies to half the plate, and your starches to one quarter the plate. Start eating high fiber whole grain breads instead of that white fluffy crap they call bread. OroWheat has some nice thin buns that are whole grain and 100 calories. They are thin, but very tasty and better for you and they don't fall apart like those fluffy buns do.

As a diabetic you need to watch not only your sugar, but your fat intake as well. Diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure seem to go hand in hand. Get your blood pressure and your cholesterol checked at the same time you get your blood sugar tested.

You are a young man with a family to take care of. Take care of yourself first so that you are around to take care of them!! :)

so tomorrow morning I will be going to my grandmothers house. She apparently has (still factory sealed) an entire blood sugar testing kit, including lancets, test strips and the meter, with instructions. And she has several of the information books on diabetes that she has collected throughout the years

Has the diet helped improve things significantly?

dude; since changing my diet and cutting the sugars like I have... I have felt so much better. I have been alert, I have not had joint stiffness anywhere near as badly.

I have felt like a new man. I feel like the sexy ***** I was at the age of 15-23. Now if I can only get my self image to follow suit.

Just because I feel sexy.. do not let that be an implication that I think I look sexy. as far as I am concerned I am one step above 'hideous chud' (in the words of Randall from Clerks)

I scare small children... But I will see what I can do.

I am considering getting some pics professionally done. Lisa has a friend who is a professional photographer.. and I want some good pictures that will show off my tattoos. Maybe I will get some pictures done with my eldest. (the one who is biologically mine)
