I'm starting to appreciate good tequila on whole new levels over the last few months.

It started when we sipped a nice bottle of Patrón Gold Añejo (a nice, but overpriced and common Tequila brand) at my dad's place, and I've been reading up on it ever since.

I'm almost sad right now, I picked up a brand in Mexico that I've never seen before.
Tequila Los Azulejos - Añejo, 100% de Agave. They let me sample it and it was delightful, but it doesn't appear I can restock in Canada - which means i have to save the bottle for some special occasion. The agave taste in this stuff is very pronounced, but it's so smooth.

There appears to be almost as much as much "snobbery" in Tequila drinking as there is in Scotch. I'm turning into a fan. Anybody else have any brand suggestions they'd like to share? (If anyone says Cuervo, they get thrown into a cactus patch.)

Cabo Wabo was pretty good. I'm more partial to the Silver Tequilas myself. Patron is good, Don Julio is also good.

Jose is not your friend. However, for mixed drinks like margaritas and such, Cuervo is acceptable.

Watch the Three Sheets (hulu) episode on Mexico, they go into tequila pretty well.

It's something I enjoy in drinks, but I'm not yet enough of a connoisseur to drink plain, so I can't really give a "what's best" opinion.

Cabo and Don Julio are both pretty good.

"Silver" or Blanco tequilas are virgin, distilled and bottled without aging.

Reposado are aged, usually on oak barrels like bourbon, for an intermediate period of time (several weeks up to 6 months or more, it varies by distiller).

Anejo are aged greater than ~6 months.

Extra Anejo ... it's **** expensive usually.

Oro is just a blend of Blanco with the other, aged varieties.

You may also enjoy mezcal, which are distilled from agave, but have a very smokey flavor to them.

As for lesser tequilas, such as 1800 and Jose, they are fine for highballs (Long Islands, Adios ****) and such. Tequila Sunrises are a great drink ... espcially for breakfast!

Don Julio and Don Eduardo are both pretty good.

Risking the cactus patch, Cuervo 1800 isn't all that bad either.

What it really sounds like is that you're developing a taste for Anejo tequilas. And they are generally much smoother and "Scotch-like" than the Reposados and Silver tequilas.

I highly recommend Aha Toro.
Also Sauza Hornitos.
Even the low end Sauza blows any Cuervo away.

I must have had a bad bottle of Sauza, because it was horse-pee. Harshest, nastiest tasting tequila I've ever tasted.

I should add...make sure the label says "agave" or else it will taste like horse-pee.

It's always the fine print that bites you in the ***...

I just have to ask..... how do you know what horse-pee tastes like?

While I would never drink my Los Azulejos mixed, I received some good advice about the quality of liquor used in a margarita:

There is nothing wrong with using a medium-to-very good tequila in a margarita, and a very nice triple sec (preferably Grand Marnier) is mandatory. They will make a difference, with one proviso:

If you're using anything better than a crappy mixto tequila blend and yet are not squeezing your own lime juice, you're wasting the tequila. The lime juice is paramount...it's the foundation of the margarita.

Not just "Agave" but "100% de Agave." Mixto blended Tequilas are still at least 51% Agave. The trouble is the other 49%, which is usually distilled from sugar cane, meaning you're basically drinking rum mixed with tequila.

For margarita's Patron silver is my preference, but if i'm slumming it i'll go with Hornetos which is almost as good as the Patrons but only $25 for 750ml ($30 for 1000ml) vs $40 for 750ml of Patron silver.

I'm not a huge tequila fan, though I have been known to occasionally have some Patron. I also tried Porfidio once, it's surprisingly expensive (140 or so a bottle), smooth and tasty though. The bottle is also cool, kinda that cheap Mexican glass look with a cactus inside. I think I still have the bottle somewhere.

Cabo is my favouritest drink in the whole wide world.
