Last night, at 0030, cops were banging on my door, telling me to leave because my building was on fire. The fire took out most of the central unit, but the fire walls stopped it from coming to our end of the building.

I'm fine, but please send your prayers or thoughts for the other people. I'm not sure if anyone was hurt or killed, I haven't heard, and I hope not, but if you have any prayers left over from Haiti, please pray for them.

THanks

Oh Wow. I am so glad you are ok!!! Praying for the rest of the tenants. *prayshard* We just had a fire 3 weeks ago and 9 people died...6 of them were children.
I am fervently hoping and praying that everyone is ok where you are.

Hope you said a prayer for the babies. :( So sad, so sad. The community rallied together marvelously to take care of the families....we were in Columbus and I'm ashamed to say I didn't have the emotional fortitude at the time to get involved.

Raf, you really need to update so we can quit worrying!

Wow, intense. Glad you're OK. Hope the folks on the other side of the building are, too.

The building was officially condemned as of Friday, as I expected. I went out of town for a snowboard trip - I wasn't sticking around for the BS, had to get my head right.

Anyway, I'm officially homeless but I am staying at a friend's place for a spell ... gonna put what I can get out of my apartment into a storage cube.

edit: no fatalities that I heard of, nor serious injuries but I have to get the police report/investigation paperwork for my insurance company.

Rafael,

My condolences about this situation. But if I could possibly suggest a positive in this?

You have an issue where you need to quit drinking, some of your friends are mainly 'drinking buddies'....

This could be an opportunity to relocate.

Hey thats a pretty good idea. Not the best way to have an opportunity present itself, but you could turn it into something good I bet.
I hope the transition goes well for you, Raf, and I'm sorry you lost your home.

This happened to us a few years back. Same scenario. We lost about 80% of what we had due to smoke damage. Talk to the Red Cross in your area. They may be able to give you a small amount of cash to get you started up again. Doesn't hurt to ask. It helped us out. It really helped out our next door neighbors who lost everything. Talk to the local firefighters as well, they may have other resources you can tap into that most people don't know about. Good luck.

DS, you my man, are right on my frequency.

I actually thought of this this weekend. However, the problem is, my friend that I'm living with for the meantime is the heavy drinker that I used to binge with ... err, guess it's not binging when you get sloshed 4 nights a week or more.

Anyway, I just came up with an awesome idea: NA beer. O'Doul's makes an amber ale that's decently tasty, and I'm just going to drink those ... I'll rip the labels off or drink them out of a pint so people aren't constantly bothering me. Because if there's one thing I've learned after 24 years, it's that people will constantly asking why you aren't drinking/smoking/rolling/dropping/snorting/shooting etc. when everyone else is.

This just saves me from making the same explanation 30 times every night.

I wouldn't do that if I were you, Raf. I dated an alcoholic and went to meetings with him and everything. His thinking about the social aspect (drinking on poker nite) led him down that path and the NA beer led him right back to where he was....just sayin.
