On a positive note, the victim severed the left hand and got the upper body- thats tough to do! Go go mall ninja!

With a properly sharpened, quality sword it's actually hot hard (with a little training) to cut entirely through a human torso. Severing a hand is pretty trivial.

Believe it or not, even a cheap stainless blade could do it if they guy managed a good cut (intentionally or inadvertently). I can cut green bamboo clean with a blunt longsword.
