spends PAC money to buy her own book

Quote:
Sarah Palin has been using her political action committee to buy up thousands of copies of her book, "Going Rogue," in order to mail copies of the memoir to her donors, newly filed campaign records show.
Alaska governor's decision to step down has many people puzzled.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate had her political organization spend more than $63,000 on what her reports describe as "books for fundraising donor fulfillment." The payments went to Harper Collins, her publisher, and in some instances to HSP Direct, a Virginia-based direct mail fundraising firm that serves a number of well-known conservative politicians and pundits.

I wonder if her grass roots following is happy that her PAC was used to transfer over 60K to her publisher, and to HSP Direct. Heh. I'm guessing she's probably collecting royalties as well. But we shall see.

Interesting. She's never really been too high on my list though so I can't say I care much about this.

Sounds like a boneheaded political move to me, but considering, I'm there no shortage of politically boneheaded things done with PACs by politicians out there.

Not a corrupt move? Just a foolish one?

Oh, is she still around?

I'm not entirely sure what the problem with this is. The practice is entirely legal, and doesn't seem to be all the different than any of the other "gifts" that various organizations buy up and give out to their donors during fund-raising. The only ethical issue I see if she's receiving royalties for this, which is currently unknown. Even then, if her donors don't care, I don't know why the rest of us should. If they don't like it, they'll stop donating. Problem solved.

Morally, potentially, if the intent is to pad the sales figure to give the book an appearance of higher market penetration than it would normally. Criminally, not that I can tell, unless the money used buy the books isn't actually buying any books, but just going to the publisher and then back out to royalties.

I don't think it's criminal. But as a donor to her PAC, I'd probably be pretty pissed, especially if she's collecting royalties, or if I didn't happen to be one of the lucky duckies to get her book.

I think it helps to illustrate a picture of Mrs. Palin that's been forming since the election, though. She's pretty much just a greedy opportunist.

It's pretty much on the contributors to PAC to condemn or actions as reprehensible by discontiuing contributions then, right?

Free market failure, fails, right?

Maybe, maybe not. It's not unusual the the nicer "gifts" for fundraising go the higher donor levels, though. I think most people understand that. And I don't know how much $64k is in relation to how much her PAC pulls it. I may find her irrelevant, but I'm still willing to bet that $64k is probably chump change that no one cares about.

Cynically, I might say that this a move to pad sails figures, but realistically, $64k worth of books (actually less than that, since this was for printing and shipping) is nowhere near enough to do that. And the cold, hard, reality is that her publisher, just like every other publisher is already cooking the sales figures to much greater extent than this. I'm not saying it would be right, if that's what she's trying to do, but it's pissing into the ocean at high tide. The major best seller lists are not based on actual end-consumer purchases. Most best sellers are nothing of the sort; the figures have been falsely inflated for decades. Most people probably don't realize this.

As opposed to the rest of Washington? ...

I don't think you're nearly cynical enough.

It's not illegal, is unethical, and there may be some pissed-off PAC contributors.

Outside of that, what's the point of the thread? I cannot stand Sarah Palin (she's the Paris Hilton of the political arena), and even I saw a sarcastic thread title with her name authored by Monte and groaned "Oh, God" before clicking.

The entire reason for the thread was the opportunity to make the following statement:

And that's some mind-blowing news, let me tell you.

This is as tiresome as the 6,000 anti-Obama screeds going concurrently.

Is this about her being naked? Because, if it's not, please don't waste any more time.

No, you probably wouldn't be. As a donor to her PAC, you'd like the woman, her politics, and may even have gotten a copy of her book out of the deal.

Or to put it another way, if Obama took the money out of hid PAC to buy as many copies of "The Audacity of Hope (or whatever)" would it even merit a blip on the Polidar?

Bad taste, but I don't see that it's illegal. If she keeps the profit off the book sales, that's certainly inethical.

Entirely normal operating expenses. It gets her ideas in more hands and thats rather the purpose of donating to any PAC.

Just wondering if there are any actual published Authors here(thinking Khross might be). If not I can assure the rest you, you have no clue how the publishing industry works. Sarah Pain was paid for here work up front and a time of publication.
She's not getting any new checks from the publisher. She might if her book makes to the fifth or sixth printing.
She wants to promote an Idea, she can use her book to do it. you do note that she has to buy her book from the publisher.
She's getting no free ride here. At best she's keeping the Publisher interested in future works as she can move books.

She may or may not get royalty checks. I think that if she spent PAC money in an effort that personally profits her, there might actually be some legal hot water. I don't know for sure, though. Again, I don't know if she is collecting royalties or not.

Monty, why are you so concerned about Palin's lying liarness, when Obama is still sending predator drones into stanland and killing civillians or opening new versions of Gitmo?

Since Monty brought up the war in Iraq at every opportunity no matter what the OT was, I'm going to since has has forgotten nothing has changed. I think it's a good question though.

Just operating than my statement Stands on how publishing works, As I have 2 associates that are published Authors, after advance and completion payments they have yet to every see another royalty check for their work.
even though the works are still in book stores and into the 3rd an 4th printings.
It Takes a very high sales count before royalties kick in. The higher the advanced the higher the sales count.
