Whatever, I don't feel bad. Typing in red text is way more rewarding than drinking margaritas, dancing, swimming with dolphins and having the Carribbean ocean within touching distance.

While I think that Monte was trying to "work the system" of the new moderation rules, and that bit him in the ***. (I'll even say rightfully so) I do think there has been inconsistency in the moderation in Hellfire, which is some of what he's been reacting to.

A certain amount of inconsistency is to be expected. The mods are different people and have different ways of thinking, and moderation is judgement calls. They also haven't been at it that long. I don't think the inconsistency has been to untoward levels.

You have to bear in mind that for the most part, the mods don't proactively moderate (at least what I have gathered from previous statements). In the absence of a report, they let things go. So now you have to look at what gets reported. Anecdotally, reports about Monte, and reports from Monte. The problem with reports from Monte is that of the boy who cried wolf. The problem with reports about Monte is (I think) the piling on factor. I think there's maybe been two or three serious (I know there've been a few practical joke type) reports that didn't involve Monte in some fashion, and those have been resolved (as I recall) without rancor.

Just to be clear, I've said multiple times that while Monte can be a pain sometimes in Hellfire, a lot of people here let him push their buttons over and over and over ... and over... and over... and over... again. And every time it's like the first time they've seen him post, and nobody lets it go. Half the things people went ballistic over were innocuous and some people jumped down his throat for no reason. While he may bring a lot of that on himself, both parties were too stubborn to stop.

At the end of the day though, virtually every report was by Monte or about him. That was the fact I couldnt overlook any longer so I agreed 30 days was justified.

You know... If the mods handed out some specially formulated cookies prior to visits to hellfire, this place would be a whole lot more fun. :neko:

I agreed with everything you said in your first paragraph but you completely contradicted it in your second paragraph...and this is why the current moderation system in my humble opinion is garbage and caters to groupthink and the tyranny of the majority...but I don't expect the majority to see that.

I don't see how tyranny of the majority has anything to do with this. As was pointed out to Monty, the supposed "majority" has some knock-down dragout arguments of its own and fundamental disagreements on many issues.

More importantly, the other relatively liberal posters don't attract the same sort of attention Monty does, nor do they behave like him.

This forum is unreadable with Montegue posting here. Dash is correct that this is not entirely Monte's fault. Many of the people who argue with him are posting like total dipshits as well. (Yes, that meant you, and you know who I'm talking about.)

Simple fact is, one person is the catalyst to it all--one guy. This forum does not tend to have those problems with other liberal posters. If Monte cannot learn to post here without antagonizing the many, many people who have issues with him, he really cannot post here, period.

You know, if it were just the age old Nitefox and Monte feud, I'd be more sympathetic. While I get along with Nitefox now, I of all people certainly understand how someone could end up unable to get along with him. Nitefox and I had our differences back in the day. Similarly, if they were isolated heated disagreements--there's probably not a regular poster in Hellfire who hasn't gotten into a nasty sparring match with me at some point. But it stays in that thread and is forgotten about, and then we get along in the next thread. Somehow, that doesn't happen with Montegue. It's not his positions, other people have held the same and been fine. There's more to it. The way in which he treats other posters here is entirely without respect. He may not have been the first, but all it took was one person to act like a jerk to him, and suddenly Monte would retaliate in kind to everyone else who might be on the same side of the argument as the one who attacked him. Then it would continue in kind, escalating worse and worse from thread to thread.

A couple of you have on occasion suggested Montegue is actually a victim, that the glade picks on him. Even if this is true, the truth of the matter is he brings it on himself, in its entirety. The malice and lack of goodwill may be beyond the point of reconcilliation, even if he tried, I don't know, but the fact is he has never really tried, and I doubt he really will. On a personal level, I've had arguments with him but have gotten along with him since at least two incarnations of the glade-ago. But as a moderator, I cannot ignore that he is at the center of almost every bit of strife on this forum. He's a magnet for it, and I simply do not believe that his presence is condusive to a community environment, if he continues to post the way he has been posting for the last several years.

Slythe believe me when I tell you I sympathize with Monte's position, I am the token conservative on my other board and I'm worse than Dick Cheney on opium to them but... we manage to get along and there is no moderation at all because it's not needed. There are others here who share opposing views but they dont generate this kind of heat. Eh this could get long but if you want to give me **** for taking the easy way out that's fine I accept it. I dont do much if any of the moderating here, the others have to shoulder that burden and it's a lot of crap for which you get slammed no matter what you do. It's not fair for me to say no when I know that a) regardless of who else deserves a time out, Monte still does, and b) if he stays out of Hellfire things will calm down. I'll leave it there for now.

Perhaps I could be sympathetic to the idea that it's the mean and nasty conservatives and libertarians who pick on Monty constantly that cause him to act the way he does, if it weren't for the fact that Monty's victim mentality stretches back a number of years, and that he previously had to be banned along with Nitefox because the two of them couldn't stop throwing **** at each other. But hey, banning Monty is just a foul plot to censor liberals.

you know, bashing members (even banned ones) is also against the rules. welcome to /report kiddies.

I'm furious that a number of members chose to report some fairly innocuous statements and then commit far worse sins in the thread discussing the banning. Seriously?

I'm sorry, but posting increasingly and purposefully inflammatory comments by tenuously linking (in error) the opinions and actions of other actors, strawmanning technical but not moral advocacy for such actions by polarizing the nuanced positions into a binary spectrum, then acting in a completely polarized and binary by regurgitating the positions from various blogs, opinion pieces and talking points all the while venemously accusing the rest of the board for ignorantly acting like that is not "fairly innocuous".

Nor is a post-mortem analysis of such group of events "bashing".

some people see the world in black and white.

But I have serious issues with dismissing the sins of others even if the victim 'brought it on themselves' -- it doesnt make the perpetrator any less guilty.

Regardless of whether that is true or not (and as a moderator who saw the reports, I have to say, a significant percentage of people's reports against Montegue had some merit. Almost none of his reports against others had any merit at all), the simple fact of the matter is that Montegue and the majority of people who post here are not compatible, they cannot coexist on the same message board...this place is better without Montegue posting in it. Now, the other option is to ban everyone else and allow only Montegue to post here.

Do the math.

What "sins" were dismissed? Surely you have positive proof for your claim of biased moderation.
